The whole premise of the article is to clean up the offense line and penalties so the Packers can throw deep.

Easier said than done.

The Packers don't have the offensive line to do that. They don't have the players up front that New Orleans has for example. They're also among the most penalized teams in football the last few years or just under Mike McCarthy.

A lot of wishful thinking IMO.

The short passing game looked good this past Sunday. As stated, Jennings took a middle yardage pass and made it a big play. Rodgers also threw for 344 yards. Short stuff including screens, slants, and comebacks along with running the football will setup the deep ball in the end.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

The penalty thing might happen, although I'm not too hopefull, as it has been horrible for quite a while now, but just fix the O-line? It's obvious that that isn't going to happen anymore. Not this season.

This article is really nice if it's supposed to be about next year, though. If we've cleaned up the O-line issues, that is.

I have made my position on this pretty clear in other threads. I don't care about throwing long OFTEN nor do I think we should throw it short any less than they have lately.

My point has been you leave the playbook OPEN and call the plays that present the best opportunity when it's there.

There has been a lot of discussion about whether it's the short pass that opens up the long pass or the other way around but what I believe is you line up with all your bullets in the gun and make teams respect the danger your offense presents. It's not one setting up the other but the THREAT of any pass at any time.

I also don't believe the short passing game is a cure-all for Rodgers and the sacks. We went mostly short pass against Dallas and he got sacked five times. The short passing game is all about timing and getting the ball out quickly to the first read but if that player is blanketed it ends up taking the QB as much time as an ordinary pass play to check off and throw it to someone eles.

Just being real if we were to make it to the playoffs I cannot see how we will compete if the big play/quick strike capability is not maximized. Out of all the problems the Packers present to opponents that has to be a concern for teams and they have to try to defend it.....unless we don't offer it to them. For me that would be a blessing for the other guys.

If teams really don't have to worry about Jennings, Driver, and Finley downfield that is a huge load off their back. Those are the money guys in the money games and you have to give them the opportunity to make the plays or the other team have guys that will.

I agree a lot with Warhawk and the other posters. Take what is presented week to week. Now yes, it's good to try and assert our will for the game style we want. Case in point, the Niners presented a top 10 run defense, and we asserted our will by running it down their throats to open the game. To me that proved that our Oline can achieve some good things in its current state, now it's a matter of consistency. So much of the debate about throwing it short versus long has to do with what the defense is calling against us. We need to be prepared to move the ball either way, whichever offers the least resistance. With better protection we can get more routes down the field and still have the short comeback or drag routes, and let Rodgers pick which to fire on. So definitely what Warhawk stated, load the gun with all the bullets and fire the correct one as it presents itself.

I would also like to say that from what I have seen from Clifton and Tauscher when they have both been in there is more reasonable time for Rodgers.

In the Cowboys game both guys did a good job in the first half and then Tauscher went down and Clifton looked to have gotten winded which is understandable having been out with the ankle and the guy he was up against. Outside the sacks Rodgers was seeing some time to get the ball out.

This week I thought was better as well. The QB is going to see pressure. It's what defenses do today. What I am saying is I would want to see the Clifton, Tauscher/Lang combination continue on before deciding we just don't have the protection to open the playbook.

This isn't Barbre on one side and Lang or Colledge on the left and that's when we were really getting smoked out there. In those times Rodgers never had time whether he was sacked or not and I am seeing him back there with at least some time more often now.

Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Fining them is the goal, per the people who made the rule anyway.
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still waiting on the kickoff rule changes. Did hear yesterday that the touchback proposal will now be the 30 yard line, not the 35
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
