Before you guys get all self-righteous, examine yourselves. Please don't tell me that you never once fantasized about your sister during your hormonal teen years, particularly if she was hot.

Ted... give this kid a call and have a long talk with him.. at least get a feel for the kid years removed.

Tony Washington still waits

Posted by Mike Florio on April 29, 2010 6:17 PM ET
Before the draft, reports emerged that one of the best prospects in the pool, Tony Washington, had been convicted at age 16 of having sex with his biological sister. He spent two weeks in jail and, more importantly, is a registered sex offender.

Coincidentally (or not), the Abilene Christian tackle has been regarded as radioactive by the NFL, despite being viewed as a Day Two prospect.

But Washington wasn't drafted at all. Since Saturday, he hasn't even received an offer to sign with a team as an undrafted free agent.

"I'm in complete shock," agent Vann McElroy told Darren Rovell of CNBC. "I feel so bad for this kid. This is something that happened seven years ago and, probably because of the [Ben] Roethlisberger situation, he hasn't been called."

Frankly, we think the situation has a greater connection to the Dez Bryant situation. It's widely believed in league circles that Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland asked Bryant if his mother was a prostitute because Bryant inevitably will face similar (and worse) comments on the field and in the locker room.

Multiply that dynamic by 1,000 as to Tony Washington.

Then there's the reality that teams simply don't want to employ a guy who had sex with his sister. "Disgusting" was the word from one team before the draft. So while football talent ordinarily knows no discrimination, football coaches apparently have yet to embrace the notion of looking the other way when it comes to registered sex offenders.

Whether or not it's fair doesn't matter. Regardless of the specific reason for their aversion, Washington's past conduct lands in territory into which no NFL team is willing to throw a lifeline.

"We spent hours of our time, providing letters, testimonials from people to tell this kid's story," McElroy told Rovell. "It isn't like he's some pervert hanging around in the bushes. He's a good kid who screwed up, who since then was accepted by the board and admitted to one of the most conservative colleges out there. . . . Someone should give this kid a chance."

Eventually, someone will. If a grown man who was a convicted dogfighter and admitted dog killer deserves a second chance, a kid who did something really stupid does, too.

I use to have concerns about you NON, but now I'm just worried. I've never had one Oedipal thought in my life, and I don't have a sister; but I do have a couple cousins that I had nasty thoughts about.

So because people would make ignorant, snide remarks about a guy who by all accounts has turned his life radically around, we shouldn't take a chance on his talent? I don't buy it.

A guy in my unit, a former recruiter, was telling me a story about a prospect he recruited. When he ran the guy's record, he came up as a registered sex offender. Naturally, he asked the guy what the fuck was up. The man said, "Dude, that's my wife. We were engaged, and the day before she turned 18, her parents turned me in for statutory rape." They got married anyway, he got convicted and served some time, and now he's serving his country as an American soldier. He and his wife are still together.

I see no reason why teenage sexual peccadilloes should condemn anyone to a marginalized adulthood. This guy didn't rape his sister. If underage incest is so evil, why isn't she paying the same penalty he is? Because our puritanical sexual laws misogynistically assume that women are somehow less capable of making sexual decisions than men are. Remember, he was underage too.

Well if he was caught peeping in windows or masturbating in the bathroom it would be ok and forgotten. But please, the kid boned his sister. Now I might be ultra conservative, but that is some twisted shit. Obviously many of the powers that be in the NFL feel the same or this guy would be on a roster already, cause he plays a premium position.

If you want him in GB that's one thing, just stop convincing me to give the kid a pass on his conduct. Unfortunately in this country, we have a thing called a defining moment, and for Mr. Washington his happens to be boning his sister, an act one does not live down.

Yeah, he "boned" his sister, and she "boned" too. So if you are going to hold him in contempt, you damn well better be prepared to do the same for her. Not to do so would be gross sexism and misogyny.

And how do you know that the stigma does follow her around as well?

Of course, that is not going to make national news.. because well she isn't going into a Multi-Billion dollar industry. But follows the theme of trying to lessen the guilt of the male offenders, framing it as some sort of justification. Simply put.. he is guilty.. plain and simple.. however by accounts has accepted the responsibility and made changes in his life and outlook upon it.

Now, I hope that kid gets a chance.. sounds like he has turned his life around.. but when he gets that chance I hope he grabs hold tight.. because it is going to be a bumpy ride.

Why a second chance?

This league employs ex gang bangers, acquitted murder suspects, drug pushers and abusers, domestic violence offenders, adulterers, and all forms of sinners.

If this kid has the talent.. it would be just improper in my mind not to give this kid a chance. Anything short is just another form of bigotry.

dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
