The hottest trend in supplemental football workouts since the medicine ball continues to pick up new participants.

The latest guy to take up MMA training? Packers running back Ryan Grant.

The evidence comes from photos posted by FOX's Jay Glazer at his Twitter page. Given that Grant is listed at six-foot, one-inch, we now realize where Glazer got his tough-guy image.

Interesting.

I fought /trained Pradal Serey when I was a young man.

Grant looks vulnerable (For Fighting.) in that photo. Leaning forward, feet parallel behind his body weight. Bad footwork for fighting, perhaps OK for running a football.

I am not sure how MMA helps NFL players other than conditioning. Might be Ok for pass rushers, utilizing the FOUR upper limbs in the EIGHT limbs of motion that is taught.

I think this is a fad. But if it works, great... All the best for those who make the effort.

This fad will last until the first player is lost for the season with a concussion or knee injury. Then the NFL will crack down like they cracked down on skydiving and other risky activities. Don't most players have risky-activity clauses in their contracts already?

Bedard in his blog post reports that Glazer talked about how they've been working to loosen up Grant's hips - Glazer says one side was much more stiffer than the other and they've been working on that in training.

Interesting, I thought.

I heard this on NFL Radio on Sirius - they said Grant's range of motion was "much" improved. That and improved conditioning can only be good things...
