Interestingly, the one big lineup change--putting Raji at the nose and moving Pickett to DE--seems like a move that was made mainly to improve the run defense, by beefing up the line and protecting Brad Jones. I don't think Pickett will rush the passer quite as well as Jolly did.

Actually, I see it as a move that could potentially help the pass defense. Raji is lining up at NT because of his ability to rush the passer. The NT is the closes defender to the QB, which means his path is the easiest. The best way to disrupt a passer is to penetrate up the middle. If Raji does that, the pass rush will improve.

Also, Pickett is a big space eater and Jones will get to play behind that. In theory, Pickett could take up two blockers, which will leave Jones in a lot of one on one situations. This will allow him to fly to the football a lot more and hopefully rush the passer.

For me, the best way to solve the pass defense is to develop a more consistent pass rush. I believe that's what the Packers are banking on with these two positional changes.

Yeah, that must be what they are hoping for. If Raji can be a pass rushing force in the middle, as he was in college, it will work. That remains to be seen. And it's hard for me to see Pickett commanding any more attention as a pass rusher than Jolly did.

It is still easier for me to see the benefits of this change for the run defense, though, rather than the pass defense, especially considering that they will most likely be switching into a different formation in long yardage situations.

Pickett is your basic space eater. The reason he'll command attention is because you need two guys on him to get him blocked. Gilbert Brown wasn't a pass rusher, but he still helped the pass rush when he was on the field because blockers had to occupy him. Pickett won't rush the passer at all because that's not what he does, but he's going to take on blockers and free up lanes for Brad Jones to fly on.

Richard Seymour and Vince Wilfork didn't rack up big time sack totals in New England. In the case of Wilfork, he's not a pass rusher, but because his presence is so great, it needs to be accounted for. That's what GB is hoping for by getting Pickett on the field at DE.

With that said, you're right that Green Bay will hope to get most of their rush from a different formation. Raji and Jenkins will probably be the two down lineman in GB's nickel package.

I really hope one of the Rookies can step up as a decent DE because who knows what is happening to Jolly and I don't think Pickett is really meant to take over that spot I kind of get a feeling that they were just putting him there to get him reps and get familiar with the position for when/if Jolly is gone.

These are most likely some of the variations that Capers likes to work with. They may not be staples of the defense but team have to plan for them or play against them unprepared. Remember Capers likes to attack with different schemes. He's had a year to install and get the team familiar with the "basics" now he can really add to that. I'm really looking forward to watching what he does this year.
