I actually think McGinn may have greater access, for whatever reason. I haven't seen the quotes in McGinn's article elsewhere. If Ted Thompson is standing around in the locker room surely its not just McGinn who is standing there interviewing him. Also, McGinn is the one who gets a big in depth interview every year. That is special access right there.

It's because those quotes basically are stating the obvious. Ted doesn't actually like to go all formal and invite all reporters to him. After the 2007 NFC Championship loss, Ted was giving one of these informal interviews and then the camera came over, to which Ted remarked about not liking where this had gone because he unfairly was getting all the attention instead of the players who got them to that point.
Quite simply, there is not any time for McGinn to get special access to Thompson. I am not sure if Ted sits and watches games in the press box, but after the game is over McGinn has to go attend MM's press conference, then go to the locker room and get quotes, and then get a story done in a span of 2-3 hours. I do not see where he would be able to fit in specially meeting Ted, and if he somehow could then I would certainly expect more profound questions than those about what he thought of the team performance.
Also, if I am not mistaken the JS is granted the opportunity to do an interview with Ted Thompson. Being the most senior writer on staff, I do not think McGinn is afforded any special access himself. Moreover, up until a couple of years ago (when Jason Wilde asked both Ted and Mike in separate interviews if they knew what they were doing in the wake of trading Favre) the PG and another local paper also got to interview Ted.
