KIDS SHOW UP MAYOR

Last week, students and faculty at Niagara Falls High School celebrated "James Starks Day" in honor of the hometown hero whose remarkable achievements rocketed him into the Green Bay Packers starting lineup in Sunday's Super Bowl. An entrepreneurship class at the school sold several hundred T-shirts it had made up to honor the 2005 NFHS grad.

Also last week, there was a public hearing to discuss the proposed $130 million bond issue the Niagara Falls City School District is attempting to float for a major overhaul of school buildings throughout the city. Not one single member of the "public" showed up, leaving school district officials alone to chat among themselves and to a lone newspaper reporter, who was not from the Niagara Gazette.

The bond issue will be voted on at a special election, scheduled for Feb. 15. Since the $130 million will virtually all come in the form of state aid, there's really no reason not to vote for it. Local tax rates will remain unaffected.

Say what you'd like about the Niagara Falls school district, compared with the daily freakshow that passes for government at City Hall, it is a model of efficiency. Responsible people taking their responsibilities seriously, rather than using them as stepping stones to fulfill some higher ambition or build monuments to themselves.

The sensible plan they've put forth will ultimately benefit the city's future -- our children.

The last time the district launched a major capitol improvement project, the one that resulted in the construction of the new Niagara Street school, voters overwhelmingly supported the bond issue. School taxes were not increased then either, in fact the school taxes are the same now as they were in 1995.

City taxes, however, have been increased on several occasions, most recently by our current mayor, Paul Dyster, whose idea to create a museum dedicated to a phony city history and a new train station in a neighborhood even more remote and forbidding than the one that currently hosts it has few supporters here.

Fortunately for Dyster, and unfortunately for the taxpayers, we won't get the opportunity to vote on whether the mayor's left-field thoughts on economic development here warrant our multimillion-dollar investment in the faddish "green technology" he embraces.

The reality is that the entrepreneurship class selling John Starks T-shirts at the high school had more real-life private sector success than any of Dyster's frivolous misadventures in economic development here during his three years in office.

Cheesey (1h) : "Wonderlic", it's how many licks you "wonder" it takes to get to the middle of a Tootsie Pop.
Zero2Cool (8h) : Stop putting words in other peoples mouth. Worry about YOU, no one else. Move on.
Smokey (8h) : Fine wpr, U2 has your's and the other's permission to piss on any member at any time. woof
Zero2Cool (8h) : But we can assume if someone doesn't know, they can ask, or perform an internet search. Move on.
Smokey (9h) : Potential NFL Draftees and Players are asked to take it to score how smart they are .
Smokey (9h) : Wonderlic is a cognitive ability test, usually administered to new employees.
Smokey (9h) : It should not just be assumed that everyone knows what,"Wonderlic" is .
Zero2Cool (10h) : Most players don't care about wonderlic. Some agents prep players. Not reasonable standard.
beast (10h) : We shouldn't judge. ..
uffda udfa (10h) : He has a rep for keen football intelligence. Some guys just don't come across as bright.
uffda udfa (11h) : What thing should we judge intelligence on? Wonderlic is out to you. How he sounds is out.. what is criteria?
uffda udfa (11h) : Are you taking issue with him not being particularly bright? Based on what?
beast (11h) : It's sad your judging a person brightness on such shallow things...
shield4life (20h) : Resign Nick Perry
uffda udfa (23-Jan) : Need some strong sharp passionate voices on D. Daniels gives great quotes.
uffda udfa (23-Jan) : Nick Perry seems to be the team leader as he was giving pregame speeches that seemed very uninspiring.
uffda udfa (23-Jan) : Morgan and his 14 wonderlic. Ever hear him talk? Man, not a bright guy at all.
uffda udfa (23-Jan) : Burnett needs to be replaced. That's our leader? Or one of them? No, thanks.
beast (23-Jan) : For the secondary, I think Burnett/Haha are the leaders.
Smokey (23-Jan) : GB needs a new motto : DEFENSE RULES ! , is intended to change the direction of the Packers focus moving forward .
Smokey (23-Jan) : Thank You Zero.
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Great reading a thread and seeing "defense rules" spammed in them all. Great reading material.
Smokey (23-Jan) : DEFENSE RULES !
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Think you need to defensive leaders. Front Seven and Secondary. We seem to lack both. Daniels is closest.
beast (23-Jan) : Packers players had a right to complain when they were being bullied by Mike Daniels... just talking about Packers ;-) jk
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : It was the 26th largest margin since 1940. Feels much worse
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : thought it was biggest margin of victory in Conf Championship, I was mistaken.
Smokey (23-Jan) : Wow ! The Packers got disrespected too !
Smokey (23-Jan) : Hello ?
uffda udfa (23-Jan) : Can't. MM burned them all.
Smokey (23-Jan) : go pack go ?
wpr (23-Jan) : Smokey AND Uffda, you both ca be placed in a timeout. Stop it.
Smokey (23-Jan) : go pack go :)
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : STOP! Talk Packers or STFU. K thanks. :-)
uffda udfa (23-Jan) : Ranting about everyone to stop talking Wolf while talking cooking appliances.
