I can run the ball, in Madden!

I think you just have to have at least a little bit of a threat at it, because we do a lot of play-action, movement game, where we’re breaking and rolling out or just play-action and throwing timing routes, and the defense has to respect it enough to suck up a little bit on the fake and give you some good throwing lanes. Sometimes you can do that by just having a big-name back in there and sometimes you need to be effective doing it. We’re going to have to prove that we can run the ball.

Before the Super Bowl run, Mike McCarthy talked about how important running the ball is, and said about half of the passing playbook was based off the threat of run... or something like that... 50% seems to be a high percentage... lets hope they get their act together.

Though the 1st string OL didn't look horrible running the ball... the back-ups have. And the 1st string still needs to get better.

See, I think with this group they have.. especially a guards.. they can run the ball. The Packers, that being MM, needs to commit to running the ball.

Before Zombieslayer goes off on the passing game.. and this being a passing league.. lol; we don't need to become a run dominate teams.

We have to be able to run when the game dictates it.. to open up the playbook, and if need be protect our defense in the mean time.

Again.. it is not just about running the ball.. it is all about what it does for the rest of the team. It is not just about being hung up on the traditional roots of the game... it is about balance and situational football. Keeping our MVP candidate from taking shots because the pass rush doesn't even pause of the run.

I don't want to see the return of Bart Starr and Forrest Greggs run run pass punt football.. I don't want to see a ground and pound game.

I want the Packers, when they need to run.. be able to run the freaking ball. It takes practice and timing.. just like a passing game.. and just the same you just can't flick a switch and it is there. Hence why they need to establish and use that running game from week one to 17.. just to have it ready and lubed for use in the playoffs when it calls for it to be used.

Don't care if it is milking the clock with a lead.. controlling the clock and keeping the defense on the sidelines.. converting shorts.. setting the table for 3rd and optional football.. or knocking in a score late.

Don't care other to be there and ready when need be.

Don't want it to be the primary focus of the offense.. as this league has rigged the game to be a passing league, but there is still an important place in football for the running game.

With teams like the Chiefs, 49ers, Giants, Bears hanging around I will say I agree 100% with this.

Exactly.

But then according to good ol zombieslayer about a year or so ago, and I paraphrase here..
..."Don't need no stinkin' defense, when we got Rodgers and our WR's. Defense doesn't win championships"

Now it is...
"Don't need no stinkin' running backs, we have Rodgers and our WR's and a better defense.
Running backs don't win championships"

I wouldn't expect this team to be in the top 5 or even 10 running the ball, but moving the ball on the ground is something this team would easily benefit from. Consistancy in the run game - even just 5 yard carries with an occasional break-out would satisfy most of us.

The overall problem I see though, is that simply plugging in a RB will not give instant success in most cases. The OL is a huge (and overlooked) part of the running attack. They will need their reps with Benson if they are looking to him for success. It will be interesting to see what happens with the runing game in the next preseason game.

of course this topic is a bit ofBeating Deadhorse- but I am glad to hear it from a player for a change, not just the fans. Let's run the ball Mike McCarthy !

I bet... and this would be weird. But doesn't it seem like sometimes A Rod can be too comfortable and actually overthrows when he has a good throwing lane. Anyone else see that happen a bit?

The semblence of a decent running game would be a real plus, to set up the passing game along with the affore mentioned. Also, the reverse is true, if teams are overplaying the passing game it would be nice to "gouge" them for 10, 20 or more yards rather than 3 or 6. Hopefully, Benson really helps. He is also suppose to be a good blocker, yes?
