Who do you WANT to be the starting cornerback alongside Tramon Williams?
I'm not too comfortable with either, but I'd have to go with Sam Shields because of his big play making ability and also if he gets burned he has the speed to compensate for it.

Sheilds, Bush never seems to turn around and make a play on the ball, even though he is often in position to do so. It drives me nuts.

I'm still really surprised Bush didn't work out better as a safety/SS. It just seems like it would suit him better, imo. Obviously I'm wrong, though.
Otherwise, I'd want Shields, especially the Shields of 2010 and 2012 preseason game 4.

I'm not a big fan of either one but if I had to pick between those 2 I'd pick Shields based on speed and I believe better ball awareness.
Hopefully he has learned how to tackle!

I will take anyone that can get the job done.. personally, if he keeps progressing, I will take Hayward by the middle of the season.
Anyway.. for this coming weekend.. I think in passing downs, with the number of receivers the 49er's have (5 # 1's, lol) we are going to see a ton of dime coverage.. so we are going to get healthy doses of both Bush and Shields.
Shields, with his head right, is a better cover corner than Bush. IMO.

Shields is better in coverage. Bush is a better tackler. So running plays, Bush. Passing plays, Shields.

That was my troubling point between the two. Bush is better at tackling, but Shields is better in coverage. I give the edge to Shields because I think he has the speed to correct some of his deficiencies.

So I answered.. but I also followed up with my choice between the two within the thread title.
2 birds.. 1 stone. [grin1]

Could Jarrett Bush guard Michael Crabtree or Mario Manningham? I don't think he can. I think Sam Shields could at least keep up with them and make game changing plays. I think Bush is better suited to guard TE's and more physical WR's. I don't like the idea of putting him in to help with the run defense because that's when play action deep balls come into play and if we're relying on DB's to stop the run we aren't doing a good job anyway.

Agreed.. I would rather not see Bush outside of the hash marks if possible.. inside I trust him more than on the edges. Good post.

He did that get that INT in the superbowl inside the hashes, maybe you're on to the something.

Packers | Jarrett Bush listed as starting CB
Was going to post this yesterday but didn't see this thread at the time.
Jarret Bush has earned his shot, look back and see just how bad he was his first couple of years.
Amazing how ted and Mike have stuck with him, and how he has shown improvement every year.
I really think Bush is more suited to play the role of Charles Woodson, but since Charles isn't going anywhere this year, time to give Jarret his shot.
Someone stated it earlier, they both are going to see a lot of playing time.

Green Bay Packers CB Jarrett Bush is listed as a starter heading into Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers, according to the initial regular season depth chart released Tuesday, Sept. 4.

The Packers.com depth chart has Sam Shields backing up Tramon Williams with Jarrett Bush starting and being backed up by Casey Hayward.

Mccarthy himself has said that he won't allow the niners to find out who they are going to see through the newspapers. Just because the depth chart says one thing, doesn't mean it actually means anything.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jarrett Bush gets the start because the 49ers are a running team and usually the first play of a series is a run when you're a running team. And I think Bush is probably better against the run.
I still would prefer Sam Shields being the guy over Jarrett Bush.

Yes.

likes to do that. So I don't believe anything he tells the media. (Which is a GOOD thing).
I do like Bush though. I know he's often the scapegoat on this site, but I like him. He's a ST demon and he plays his heart out. He's fearless too and a good tackler.
Yes, he does blow coverages, but our 2 biggest problems last year on D were:
1) lack of a pass rush,
2) sloppy tackling
At least Bush is good at tackling.

Bush is better in the slot, stuffing the run and blitzing the QB. As a third stringer behind Woody and Hayward,
No way Bush belongs on the outside.
If Shields continues to play the way he did in the last regular season game, he should have that spot.

I would take Bush. Until he gets burned in the game on Sunday I believe he can get the job done. He's one of the most athletic guys on this team. He's shown improvement in his years in GB. Remember early in his career? He wouldn't even be in a discussion for a job like this. So the fact that he is even in this discussion says something about his progression. And don't forget the pass rush was an issue last year. he is above average at coming with the blitz. For a corner

He's only in the discussion because the talent drop off. [grin1]
