The competition is fierce and nothing can be guaranteed, but it might not be wise to bet against Casey Hayward emerging as the Green Bay Packers' long-term answer at right cornerback opposite Tramon Williams.

Sunday afternoon in St. Louis will mark Hayward's first start. Sam Shields is out with a shin injury, and Davon House will be in uniform for the first time in 10 weeks.

Hayward and House, both 23, and the 24-year-old Shields all have the talent to start. It just could take another year or two to determine the ultimate order.

Hayward, the second-round draft choice, will replace Shields at right corner in the base defense and then return to the slot role in sub packages that he has held since Game 2.

Sufficiently healed from a left shoulder injury suffered Aug. 9, House has been chosen to play ahead of Jarrett Bush at right corner on passing downs.

After having played 38.8% of the snaps in the first six games, Hayward couldn't be more deserving of a chance to start.

"He's been playing at a pretty high level," cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt said Friday. "He does not play like a rookie. Thus far, he's been like a mature player."

In fact, Hayward has been little short of sensational in whatever the Packers have asked him to do.

Despite limited playing time, Hayward has intercepted three passes, a total that is two more than any other rookie cornerback in the league. Coordinator Dom Capers shook his head in amazement when he related that Hayward had two more picks Friday in practice.

"Some guys just get their hands on a lot of balls or come up with it," said Capers. "He's one of those guys."

Hayward had 15 interceptions in three seasons as a starter at Vanderbilt, stole a bunch more in training camp and has had three in the last two games.

Hayward seems to not only cover well but he is willing to take the chances and play the ball instead of the receiver. He seems to fit the MO that Mike and Dom look for in a DB.

He definitely has looked far better than I thought he would. So has Worthy.

But jury's still out on Perry and others.

So I'm not going to admit I was wrong in my draft day bitching.

Isn't he tied for the league lead in ints? That's amazing, considering his playing time so far.

Also, it was really great to see House back as well. I expect him to continue to adjust and improve as the season moves forward.

Hayward has been a pleasant surprise this year. He has had some very good coverage and his ability to find the ball, and catch it, when he turns around is a big plus.

House had some nice coverage today also. that depth in the secondary will pay dividends in the future.

I can't believe we found another gem corner in the draft. He's gonna help our secondary so much down the stretch.

What amazes me is how far down he was in the draft. You'd expect a starting caliber CB to be in the first round or maybe the 2nd. Hats off to Ted Thompson and his team. =d>

Pro Football Focus has him ranked #2 in the NFL at Overall CB behind Winfield and #1 in coverage. Tramon is ranked #11 and Same Shields #29.

Keep in mind he's played much less snaps. But 3 players in the top 29 should tell you that you have a good secondary. The problem is our LB's over the middle. I haven't seen much bad play by our safety position as well.

lead the league in sacks and 3 of the better CB's in the league right now should give you a better than 14th rank defense and 17th rank pass defense.

Anyway, Caseys looking pretty good lol

Shields is underrated, because of all the bullshit DPI calls that have gone against him.

Sure hope he's not out for the year.
