Rookie linebacker Nick Perry, who has missed the last three games with an LCL injury, underwent surgery on a lingering wrist issue and is expected to be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Lance Allan of TMJ4 in Green Bay first reported the news late Tuesday night.

Can we get confirmation on this?

A second report.

Quote:

Report: Perry Has Wrist Surgery

The Green Bay Packers’ depth chart at outside linebacker is getting short.

The Week 1 starters, Clay Matthews and Nick Perry, figure to be out of action when the Packers play their first game after the bye at Detroit on Nov. 18. Matthews will miss at least a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury and Perry’s season might be over.

According to Lance Allan of WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee, Perry had surgery on his wrist on Tuesday and is “expected” to go on season-ending injured reserve.

With all the other injuries, the Packers simply don't have the luxury of waiting for Perry. They're already holding roster spots for Charles Woodson (collarbone) and Greg Jennings (abdomen).

Perry injured his wrist in the Week 1 game against San Francisco but played every down. Over the next four games, Perry played about 40 percent of the snaps in a timeshare with Erik Walden and a sprinkling of Dezman Moses. Perry injured a knee early in the Week 6 game at Houston and hasn’t played since.

Interestingly, Perry wasn’t even on the injury report for Week 2 against Chicago. In fact, until last week, Perry’s wrist made the injury report for just one game — the Week 3 matchup at Seattle. He was removed from the injury list for the Week 4 game against New Orleans. For Week 7 against St. Louis and Week 8 against Jacksonville, Perry was ruled out with the knee injury. Again, there was no mention of the wrist.

Finally, last week, the Packers mentioned the knee and wrist before ruling him out for Arizona.

In the short term, the Packers will have to go with Walden, Moses and Frank Zombo. Walden has been outstanding. Moses, an undrafted rookie, played a season-high 43 snaps against Arizona. Zombo, who was activated from the physically unable to perform list on Saturday but was inactive, hasn’t played a snap because of an injured hamstring.

“I’ve got no problem putting Zombo in and telling him to go,” outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene said on Monday.

If it's a question of a roster spot, IR Greg Jennings. We have depth at his position.

As for whether or not the Packers play games with their injury reports:

Hopefully the Packers can afford to hold his spot. I would think he should be able to make it back by the playoffs, but I don't really know anything about the injury. He played through the injury pre-surgery, so hopefully it won't take him TOO long for him to recover. It would be too bad to see him go on injured reserve. There is some decent depth there, but Perry is the best natural pass rusher outside of Mathews. He just needs playing time.

He was playing in games with the wrist injury. WTF did you want them to say about it?

Too bad for us and Perry, I think he might have developed into a force by the second half of the season. Lucky we have Walden playing well and Zombo back. But what we really need is for Matthews to get and stay healthy.

Could we have a list of players who aren't injured?

Geez this year is getting scary.

Let's allow this to take its course.. Exhibit A. Mario Williams had wrist surgery and returned in little recovery time. We don't know exactly what was performed.. I am sure we will know by Monday's presser.

I don't know, but this makes me think his knee is what is going to put him in IR, and because of that, he went for a second opinion on his wrist. That if he was going to make it back from the knee this year, he would have held off on the wrist.

That's a good insight, but I would be surprised if that's the case if it's only an LCL injury (ligament on the outside of the knee). If it was a grade 1 or 2 sprain, then he should definitely be able to return late in the season. Perhaps it was a complete tare, but I haven't heard anything about that. I've heard it's common to also hurt the ACL with an LCL injury, but that doesn't seem to be the case here (thankfully). I also heard his knee rehabilitation had been progressing well.

It could also be a factor that the Packers can't keep holding multiple roster spots open for several weeks for players that might return at some point late in the season. That could leave them very thin on game day. Perhaps a few of the guys might have to go on IR just to have more solid game day roster. Either way, I don't really know much about the wrist. Didn't Urlacher have a similar season ending injury a few seasons ago?

If Brian Urlacher did, I would mention a guy heals quicker in his early 20's than 30's.

Checked just now. It occurred in the regular season finale and was MCL and LCL.

I beleive he was referring to the wrist injury not knee.

Urlacher dislocated it in the opener against the Pack in 09' trying to tackle Grant. There was an issue with proximity to a nerve that required surgery and 12 weeks in a cast.

I think they are only similar in that it is the wrist. I think Urlachers was much more severe.
