Guard Chilo Rachal, who left the Chicago Bears on Wednesday after being demoted in favor of Chris Spencer, is done for the season after being placed on the reserve/non-football injury list Thursday.

Rachal was back at Halas Hall on Thursday morning, according to a league source. The Bears were seriously concerned about his emotional state, the source said. According to NFL rules, Rachal had five days to report back to the team after leaving Wednesday.

By putting Rachal on the reserve/non-football injury list, the Bears have the option of not paying him for the rest of the season. Rachal would have been a candidate for termination pay if he'd been released.

Meanwhile, right tackle Gabe Carimi was told he won't start Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Jonathan Scott will replace Carimi in the lineup.

"It's disappointing," Carimi said after practice Thursday. "But I'm good. I'll be back."

The Bears also signed guard Chris Riley -- a Wadsworth native who played at Illinois State and was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2011 -- to the practice squad.

Rachal started the last eight games after replacing Spencer at left guard. The coaching staff praised Rachal for the toughness he immediately brought to the line, but he took a significant step back in Monday night’s 32-7 loss at San Francisco. Penalties also have been a problem for Rachal.

The biggest issue, however, might be Rachal’s state of mind at this point. Tribune columnist David Haugh documented Rachal’s troubled past in this story.

Rachal signed a one-year, $700,000 contract in April after spending the previous four seasons with San Francisco. He was a second-round pick of the 49ers out of USC.

The story is a bit confusing. Is he done for the year or not?

Sounds like it is the option of the Bears and they have not made a decision yet.

From everything I'm reading, he's out for the season.

If he was on a football injury list they'd have to pay him a salary (likely reduced, but dependent on the clauses in his contract). And if they released him they'd have to pay termination pay.

Placing him on the non-football injury list, they don't have to pay him any salary.

uffda udfa (11h) : The Flynn Patriots game has been used to say that he is. Seneca and Scott showed otherwise.
uffda udfa (11h) : Hundley is going to settle the debate once and for all in whether Mike McCarthy is a great coach, or not.
uffda udfa (11h) : Doesn't speak well to the talent acquired by the org, does it? Easy to say talent is great until Rodgers is gone and you have to see it wit
Porforis (12h) : Could Sam Bradford come into the Packers and post a winning record from here on out? Are there any non-starters in the NFL that could?
Zero2Cool (12h) : Teddy is replaceable. Aaron is not. Vikings have a really good defense. We do not. Understand??
Zero2Cool (12h) : You are wise enough to know the difference. Right?
uffda udfa (13h) : Here's one for you, Z. Vikes lose Teddy B. and go out and aggressively get Bradford. Packers lose 12 and go out and get a UDFA.
uffda udfa (13h) : :) Evans had a pre-draft visit with Packers.
Zero2Cool (13h) : Put it in a topic. My lord why so difficult lol

uffda udfa (16-Oct) : @ProFootballDoc says Rodgers could return Week 14 at earliest, and surgery speeds up return timeline.
Zero2Cool (16-Oct) : McCarthy dropped a "bullshit" on packers.com stream. No delay apparently lol
Zero2Cool (16-Oct) : @AaronNagler One thing is crystal clear: McCarthy is pissed at the way his team played yesterday.
Smokey (16-Oct) : 2017 Packers are done , time to focus on the 2018 NFL Draft .
Zero2Cool (16-Oct) : Mike McCarthy says Aaron Rodgers "suffered a significant injury". Will require surgery. Potentially season could be over.
Zero2Cool (16-Oct) : McCarthy --Rodgers will have surgery. Potentially season is over.
Zero2Cool (16-Oct) : NaVaorro Bowman will get his full-year salary from the 49ers AND get another $3 million from the Raiders.
