This should make some posters here pretty happy: Quote:Aaron Nagler @Aaron_Nagler McCarthy says Evan Dietrich-Smith will most likely start at center against the Titans. Most likely an audition for next year. ps: Quote:Jason Wilde @jasonjwilde
McCarthy says C Jeff Saturday (neck/shoulder) will be ready to play but Evan Dietrich-Smith "probably" will start the game for #Packers. Edited by staff Saturday, December 22, 2012 4:03:05 PM(UTC)

Interesting move which I am very interested in seeing how he does. I still say we should draft a C who can play Guard as well, but it certainly would be nice if we don't have to reach for somebody if EDS proves serviceable for next season. I though Saturday had more in the tank than what he does when we signed him. I am also thinking Peyton Manning made him look better in my eyes than he really was. |

I am glad they are giving EDS a look see. That way they know how urgent the need is to draft a C next year. If EDS is solid they can go with a lower round pick and develop him. give EDS the job for a few years in the process. That was their intent when they took Saturday. Too bad it didn't work out so well.
I hope they don't have to take a C until the 5-7 rounds. |

Injuries kept this move from happening earlier in the season. |

I like the move. The line with EDS as center should be able to get a better push in the run game. We have been running more up the middle lately which is fits our line better than all the stretch blocking. I don't expect a drop off at all with EDS. Sitton has been calling the adjustments for the line so there is no loss in that area. |

Dare I say the Packers running game is going to be a serious threat heading into the playoffs?? I love the sound of that! |

Good move. Saturday just wasn't physical enough at the point of attack. Let's see how it goes. :)

If this helps, especially the running game, good move. I would like to see Ted Thompson pick up one of the top centers with the second or third pick even if he has to trade up. A top center would really help this team IMO and should be ready to take over in a year. If Ted Thompson drafted one in the first round I would really be excited because that would mean Ted Thompson thinks he is special. |

I said it in the gameday thread, want to expand it over here. I like the prospects of running behind Lang-EDS-Sitton-Barclay. The middle run game is where I think Grant can excel, and we have seen the cannon ball that is DuJuan. |

Quote:Mike McCarthy openly admits it wasn’t an easy move to make, but one that needed to be made with two games left in the regular season.
After standing by 37-year-old center Jeff Saturday for the first 14 weeks of the season, McCarthy decided to move forward with 26-year-old Evan Dietrich-Smith at the spot during Sunday’s 55-7 win over the Tennessee Titans.
With Dietrich Smith playing the position he and the coaching staff feel he’s best suited for, the Packers’ offensive line went off without a hitch, especially considering the team was playing without starting running back Alex Green, who was out with a concussion.
In his first career start at center, Dietrich-Smith said he felt comfortable in his chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and it showed. He didn’t commit a penalty or muff any snaps in the rout.
Coupled with the fact the five-time Pro Bowler Saturday had been dealing with back and neck ailments that kept him out of practice two days last week, the Packers officially deferred to the younger, larger and quicker Dietrich-Smith on Friday.
Now, they don’t appear to be looking back.
“The center change definitely was (difficult), but any change is never easy,” McCarthy said. “Really in talking with Jeff and the number of things he’s been fighting through physically, it’s a bit of a stretch on my part. I just felt like if we were going to make this change that this was the time to do it to make sure Evan was ready for the playoffs.” the rest |

Saturday was a decent fill in this season and added a little name recognition to our line.
With Barclay playing so well, where does Bulaga go when he returns? LT? |

It will be interesting to see how the OL shapes up when next season starts. Hopefully a new OL coach will be in place in 2013. |

Good problem to have. DEPTH CHART: LT: Sherrod, Newhouse LG: Lang, Barclay, Van Roten, EDS C: EDS, draft pick/Saturday RG: Sitton, Barclay, Van Roten, EDS LT: Bulaga, Barclay,Lang And don't forget about Datko. Dude could be very good if the shoulder holds up, which imo is likely, since he's had a whole year to focus on strength training. Might force us to keep a whopping 10 players on the OL. |

Does this mean we can bring back the U-71 formation? |

Fixed it.... I seriously can't understand why people will not give Newhouse his proper due. |
