NEW ORLEANS -- Randy Moss doesn't talk to the press often. But the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver made his hour of availability count at Super Bowl Media Day.

Moss was in good spirits Tuesday, talking about the 49ers' run, his painful past Super Bowl experience and his future. He also talked about his legacy ... and he wasn't shy about assessing his place in history.

"I think now that I'm older, I do think I'm the greatest receiver to ever do it," Moss said at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. "This year has been a down year for me, statistically. The year before I retired was a down year, and then in Oakland was a down year.

"I don't really live on numbers. I really live on impact and what you're able to do out on that field. I really do think that I'm the greatest receiver to ever play this game."

It's commonly accepted that Jerry Rice is the best wideout ever, and Moss doesn't approach Rice's numbers over 20 seasons. After hearing of Moss' self-evaluation, Rice told ESPN's Adam Schefter, "Put my numbers up against his numbers."

OK, we will. Rice played six more seasons than Moss, but Rice finished with 1,549 receptions to Moss' current total of 982. Rice is ahead of Moss in receiving yards (22,895 to 15,292), receiving touchdowns (197 to 156) and 100-yard receiving games (76 to 64), according to NFL research.

It's hard to argue Rice isn't a better player, though Moss wisely builds his defense around the impact he's had. From that standpoint, he has a decent case.

He's damn good and any defense is forced to respect him, even today.

He was good, but the BEST!?!? NO WAY!
The guy still hasn't grown up. He's STILL a punk in my view.
I guess getting older doesn't mean "growing up."

I agree with Jerry Rice.

Jerry Rice said:
I think Randy Moss was the most talented, But along with being the most talented, you have to work hard — every season, every play. I was not the most talented, but I was going to outwork you. He probably could have been the greatest player ever to play the game.

Moss was the most gifted receiver to ever play the game. Million dollar talent, ten cent head is never a good combination.

Yeah.. This pretty much sums up how I feel about him as well. Too bad, his potential was off the charts.

Bingo...Jerry Rice's head on Moss'es body would be the greatest receiver ever. His negatives antics also had to take away from some of the positive impact so he loses on that argument also.

Jerry Rice is the GOAT. However, Moss deserves more respect than he gets. It's a shame his attitude overshadows his ability. He's one of the most dangerous players to play the game. In his prime, defenses feared defending him. The Packers dedicated an entire draft just to stopping him. He isn’t the greatest, but he's in the top five. I think you can make a case he’s No. 2 in the Super Bowl era, possibly No. 2 in history.

uffda udfa (2h) : Nope. I like Gus.
beast (2h) : Did you want Anthony Lynn as HC? Cushion Bradley was going to follow Lynn where ever.
uffda udfa (3h) : Gus Bradley is new DC in SD/LA. I would've loved to had him here in Green Bay.
uffda udfa (7h) : It's just fine.
musccy (7h) : 5 questionable Packers, none for Falcons. Not good.
uffda udfa (7h) : Jordy not listed as OUT or DOUBTFUL. Questionable on injury report.
uffda udfa (8h) : This is the 6th straight game we've faced someone for the 2nd time. We learn.
uffda udfa (8h) : Aaron: I like our role. I like our chances. (said he relishes being an underdog)
uffda udfa (9h) : Aaron alludes to fake crowd noise at Georgia Dome for Sunday.
uffda udfa (9h) : So, to recap. Losing streak "just the way it is", winning streak "astronomical feat". #Balanced
uffda udfa (9h) : Ironically, he called the turn around "astronomical" not just the way it is in the NFL. #Don'tMissTheIrony
uffda udfa (9h) : Ted tells Demovsky the Packers weren't underachieving when 4-6. Just the way it is in the NFL????
Zero2Cool (13h) : Only time I recall getting annoyed is when they beat a single topic over and over and over.
Pack93z (14h) : Most yes... Heller seems to get it more so... diversity in his coverage... but seemingly can highlight the pressing issues properly.
Zero2Cool (14h) : I'm kind of in the boat that they all are babblying boonies.
Pack93z (14h) : God bless it... Bill Michaels can be a stubborn SOB at times... love his Packers coverage, still think he is a buffoon at times.
Zero2Cool (14h) : Jordy Nelson Named PFWA Comeback Player of the Year
Zero2Cool (16h) : Carter is predicitng the end is in ATL for Packers.
Porforis (16h) : Or I could just completely miss the part where that was Cris Carter.
Porforis (16h) : Careful there. Don't you want to predict a Packers loss just in case?
Zero2Cool (16h) : @criscarter80 :Every fairy tale comes to an end, and this is where the magic carpet ride stops in the ATL.
Zero2Cool (17h) : McCarthy: "JC Tretter actually had surgery Tuesday. He won't be available this week"
Zero2Cool (18h) : Crosby is fine now. Full Participant in practice Thursday
Porforis (18h) : What I'm more worried about at this point is WR injuries and Crosby being sick. Who'd be the backup if Crosby can't go?
Zero2Cool (18h) : We do have hope. Our secondary has improved. Also, he had to throw 80% to get 1 point up. That won't happen again.
Zero2Cool (18h) : I like to tease sometimes.
uffda udfa (18h) : Only 80%? :). We lost by one given that stat? Wish we had hope of tightening up.
uffda udfa (18h) : Z, u should tell everyone who Quintorris is. Quintorris Lopez Jones, better known as Julio.
Zero2Cool (18h) : Matt Ryan completed 80% of his passes against Packers in October.
uffda udfa (19h) : McGinn goes full on attack mode dismissing the notion of "Packers people". Harsh.
uffda udfa (19h) : McGinn says John Dorsey likely to be next Packers GM.
Zero2Cool (21h) : Boom! Davante Adams says last year's ankle injury "more difficult to deal with'
uffda udfa (20-Jan) : Packers brass potentially leaving? Not worthy of discussing. Pressure Cooker? Never enough talk about them.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Put Quintorris in a pressure cooker.
uffda udfa (19-Jan) : Back to football: Julio says he's going to play Sunday. Did NOT say he wouldn't be limited in the game.
