It is being reported that the NFL is considering widening the field by 35 feet.
The idea being that this would make the game safer.

Any thoughts?

I don't see it making the game any safer. Sure it is a bigger field but teams tend to play the edges. it will be more of the same.

Next it will make the sidelines less safe as there will be less room or they will have to pull seats out of the stands. THAT will never happen.

Any changes made to the game to increase the safety of the game I will dislike, unless it means they go back to the leather helmet days.

Absolutely not. It would change the game WAY too much... Very offense-friendly in an already offense-friendly league.

Also, do you have a source?

It's being reported on just about any website you look at.

To be fair, this wasn't reported on either ESPN's NFL section or CBS sports. Found it on SI though, which linked to the original source:

http://www.nationalfootb...P-Sunday-Blitz-1048.html

Quote:
The NFL has looked to a lot of places to make its game safer. It even has looked to Canada. And it may continue to look north.

As recently as a year ago, the competition committee kicked around the idea of a bigger field, CFL style. And this wasn’t the first time the committee has broached the subject. Perhaps the committee will broach the subject again when it meets in Indianapolis in advance of the combine.

The Canadian field is 195 feet wide, compared to the 160 foot wide NFL field. The CFL field also is 30 yards longer, but the widening of the field is what really could impact safety regarding head injuries.

“I’m not so sure we shouldn’t think about widening the field,” former competition committee member Bill Polian said. “It’s a radical idea, but I think it’s worth thinking about. You would have more space and perhaps a safer game. I say that based on my CFL experience. There are less collisions of that type in the Canadian game.”

Click link for more. At this point, I'm not really seeing anything here that would indicate this is something being seriously considered, and I'm certainly glad. As I said before, this would radically change the game, and I would rather have the NFL destroyed quickly by a bunch of sissy ex-players lying about not knowing about the risks (as much as anybody did at the time) than slowly by twisting it into some sickening form with NBA-like scores.

I don't know about making the game safer but it sure would benefit the offensive aspect of the game.
The rule changes always seem to benefit the offensive aspect of the game.
I'm against it for that reason, I like defense.

Shall we prohibit defenders from moving completely?
Shall we rule defense out completely?
-These would dramatically cut down on injuries.

Are they admitting the Canadian game is better?

Are we going to merge with the Canadian League?

Are we going to go international?

Should we blend our game with Australian football and English soccer?

These questions and more will be answered and more...stay tuned.

Zero2Cool (7m) : Jordy Nelson Named PFWA Comeback Player of the Year
Zero2Cool (1h) : Carter is predicitng the end is in ATL for Packers.
Porforis (1h) : Or I could just completely miss the part where that was Cris Carter.
Porforis (1h) : Careful there. Don't you want to predict a Packers loss just in case?
Zero2Cool (2h) : @criscarter80 :Every fairy tale comes to an end, and this is where the magic carpet ride stops in the ATL.
Zero2Cool (2h) : McCarthy: "JC Tretter actually had surgery Tuesday. He won't be available this week"
Zero2Cool (3h) : Crosby is fine now. Full Participant in practice Thursday
Porforis (4h) : What I'm more worried about at this point is WR injuries and Crosby being sick. Who'd be the backup if Crosby can't go?
Zero2Cool (4h) : We do have hope. Our secondary has improved. Also, he had to throw 80% to get 1 point up. That won't happen again.
Zero2Cool (4h) : I like to tease sometimes.
uffda udfa (4h) : Only 80%? :). We lost by one given that stat? Wish we had hope of tightening up.
uffda udfa (4h) : Z, u should tell everyone who Quintorris is. Quintorris Lopez Jones, better known as Julio.
Zero2Cool (4h) : Matt Ryan completed 80% of his passes against Packers in October.
uffda udfa (4h) : McGinn goes full on attack mode dismissing the notion of "Packers people". Harsh.
uffda udfa (4h) : McGinn says John Dorsey likely to be next Packers GM.
Zero2Cool (7h) : Boom! Davante Adams says last year's ankle injury "more difficult to deal with'
uffda udfa (10h) : Packers brass potentially leaving? Not worthy of discussing. Pressure Cooker? Never enough talk about them.
Zero2Cool (15h) : Put Quintorris in a pressure cooker.
uffda udfa (19h) : Back to football: Julio says he's going to play Sunday. Did NOT say he wouldn't be limited in the game.
uffda udfa (19h) : Anyone ever used their dishwasher to make their Thanksgiving turkey?
uffda udfa (19h) : Favorite Ronnie Milsap song? Smokey Mountain Rain or Any Day Now?
uffda udfa (23h) : Favorite GM candidate... Wolf or Gutekunst?
uffda udfa (23h) : I'd rather sit them than play them too compromised.
uffda udfa (23h) : Yeah, Z. More pressure cooker talk and smoked turkeys.
Zero2Cool (23h) : If this were a regular-season game, Nelson, Adams and Allison probably would not play, MM says.
Smokey (19-Jan) : Mason Crosby is ill, hope it's not the Flu.
Smokey (19-Jan) : Great, can we move past that story and get back to the Atlanta game ?
Zero2Cool (19-Jan) : Packers exec Eliot Wolf has withdrawn his name for 49ers' GM job, as @TomPelissero reported. He didn't feel it was the right time.
TheKanataThrilla (19-Jan) : We'll just have to score TDs then.
Zero2Cool (19-Jan) : That's what we know.
Zero2Cool (19-Jan) : Crosby, Mason K Illness
Smokey (19-Jan) : Is He ill or not ?
Smokey (19-Jan) : Raiderpride asked, "Anyone know what Crosby's illness is?"
Zero2Cool (19-Jan) : Davante Adams expected to play- KFFL
Porforis (19-Jan) : Alright, my opinion on Jordy has changed. If he's medically cleared to play, play him.
