He was a stud. 8 times Pro Bowl. 5 time All Pro first team. 2 more on the 2nd team. 48 ints. When he played they had either 12 or 14 game seasons. Add another 26 games to his career in a pass happy league with a lot of weak qb's and he would be looking at 50 ints. |

I will say he might have been the most athletic safety in terms of range we have ever had.. probably close to Sharper there. But in terms of best overall.. Willie Wood and Leroy Butler would have to be ranked above him.. IMO. |

I have to say NICK COLLINS.
I think it is disgusting how his career ended. But that's a different issue.
I will also say LEROY BUTLER. Dude was very, very underrated. Played much longer than Nick. Was all-90s and should be in the Hall.
As for Willie Wood, I never saw him play. |

I would say Darren Sharper, but I'm not Darren Sharper.
I think Willie Wood is #1, with Leroy Butler #2. I always liked Mark Murphy, too... |

1. Willie Wood (and it's not close) 2a. LeRoy Butler 2b. Nick Collins 4. Don Hutson 5. Darren Sharper (it pains me to say it)
Butler is a long-shot for the Hall (he belongs), but the voters are such stat-whores. Sadly, Sharper has the stats and longevity that gives him a much better chance.
Some of my other favorites were Chuck Cecil, Jesse Whittenton (who passed in 2012), Doug Hart and Kenny Stills |

From Wiki "On defense, Hutson was a very good safety who intercepted 30 passes over the final six years of his career. Hutson's highest season total was in 1943, when he intercepted eight passes in only 10 games. In 1940, he led the NFL with 6 interceptions." |

Could one imagine just how big of a star off the field Hudson (assuming his talents translated into today's game) would have been with the numbers he put up.
My gosh.. |

Decided to let it go since so many posters here are kids and don't even know who Wood is how would they know about Don's great defense? Of course if one has not witnessed a player from times gone past doesn't mean they can't crack open a book or do a little research on something we call the internet. No they an only speak about something that happened in the last 6 weeks. |

I can't speak to Hutson since I only know the stats. My guess is that if I had more info, though, he'd compete for #1.
I think part of the reason I was never as impressed as most are with Butler, Collins, and, especially, Sharper, is that I did get to see Willie Wood play.
To me it isn't even close. It's like the difference between Jerry Rice and Dwight Clark. Or between Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith. Or between Ray Nitschke and Jim Carter [who IMO was underrated]. Or Butkus and Urlacher. Or Herb Adderley and Deion Sanders.
Willie Wood. |
None of the above. It wouldn't have been a wasted vote. Obama and Romney -- Those were the wasted votes. |
