a little bit of a surprise. I thought they would go for the middle tender.

A classic example of Packer fans overvaluing our players. Just because EDS was an upgrade over Saturday isn't indicative of the talent of EDS - it is indicative of how shitty Saturday had become. We could draft a second round center in this draft and make a major upgrade over EDS. I think Van Roten just may be our center next year.

C is one of the top requests on my list. 2nd or 3rd round is just fine.
I figure they would go a little higher on their tender to hedge against coming away it no C once again.

This is true, but you have to take in account that EDS was an UDFA... Meaning that they wouldn't have to give up a draft pick to sign him.

As average as EDS has proven to be, he's better than a lot of back-ups at C/G that are earning the same kind of money. I'd give him a look, at least.

That said, he obviously wasn't worth the 2nd round tender, either. Like the article says, they're taking a calculated risk. Let's just hope that we won't regret it later on.

Shields for a 2nd... With a guy like Alex Smith being worth more than a 2nd, a guy like Percy Harvin going for a 1st + 7th + Mid-round next year... I wouldn't rule it out completely that someone would make an offer to him.

I know there's quite a big chance that he won't get an offer, especially since you can get a pretty decent CB on the FA market for whom you wouldn't have to give up a high draft pick, but they won't come as cheap as Shield. Or as good at just age 25.

It wouldn't be the first time the Packers let another team write up a contract, matched it and kept the player, lol. Why use your negotiation time when you can waste another teams? Smile

Packers defensive back Sam Shields can be had for a second-round draft pick. The Packers have placed the second-round tender on Shields, a restricted free agent, a league source tells PFT. TThat means any team that wants Shields can sign him to an offer sheet, and if the Packers don’t match it, that team would get Shields and the Packers would get that team’s second-round draft pick.

Because a team with some cap space could front-load a Shields contract pretty heavily... Which is not something we could use right now.
