I just recorded a podcast on the Packers running backs with my colleagues Jason Perone and Marques Eversoll. One of them, I can't remember which, asked an interesting question: Will Brandon Saine make the Packers roster over James Starks? Saine missed most of the 2012 season after blowing out his knee. He has 18 carries [...]

IMO, Saine is more of a complete back than Starks.. but I am suspecting that if either really struggle to stay available this offseason and into camp, neither may be a part of the 2013 Packers.

Some of the depends on the draft and additional thereafter.. but I am guessing the both should be on notice so to speak.

Starks can't stay healthy so send him packing[laughing] .
Haven't seen enough of Saine to know what he has but I'll go with him for now.

We all know why Brandon Saine should be cut, same reason Packers should send Ryan Pickett and A.J. Hawk all packing.

James Starks is the clear front runner between he and Saine for the backup spot behind DuJuan Harris.

Neither. Time to move along to players that are more "available."

I was hoping for so much more from James Starks. I would love to see what he could do playing for a full season.

First they both need to prove they can stay healthy.

Starks at RB,

Saine needs to bulk up a little so he can take Kuhn's spot in 2014.

That would be a genius move by Saine, but I don't know if he'll do it. Saine doesn't have a big injury history, imo. Any player could go down with a knee injury. It's not like this is the third time in three season's he was lost for the year. Mike said Saine was our most consistent back in 2011, and that was his rookie year. Dude's got measurables.

As for Starks, he's proven he can play. He just needs to stay healthy. One major thing he could do to stay healthy is run lower.

While Starks has shown us a little bit of his ability. I have not seen anything from Saine outside of the preseason that has interested me at all.

It is hard enough for a player to return from an ACL for a RB is has to be even more difficult.

I am ok with it if one or both make the team. I am ok with it if GB finds replacements and both are released.

Starks has at least shown the ability to run the ball at a high level. Saine has never done anything but have a fast 40 time.

His rookie year he was picking up blitzers in pass pro like a veteran. Mike called him their "most consistent RB" at the end of that season.

I miss Brandon Jackson solely for his ability to pick up the blitz

He's played a handful of snaps in a handful of games. Not really much of a sample to say he does anything particularly well. He didn't exactly play so well that he took over the 3rd down back responsibilities or anything. You'd think if he was that good he could have earned himself some more playing time.

from the same coaching staff that praised the likes of Jarrett Bush before starting him against the 49ers?

theses guys would praise a pile of bird shit if it could put on the uniform.

it's coach-speak.

that, or their evaluation of talent has some serious flaws.

"high level" might be a bit much.

yeah, I don't see all the hype on Saine, I don't recall anything he's done to catch my eye. Saine is also coming off an ACL, whichin most cases (aside from purple jesus) should slow him down a bit.

I'm not saying he's a top 10 guy or anything but he's a good runner with the ball in his hands. He's quick, breaks tackles, picks up consistent yardage, and falls forward. The problem is he can't stay healthy even when he's not a full time back. If both guys get cut this year it wont bother me but I would like to see Starks get another shot.

I think and hope this will be one of the more entertaining battles at Camp this year. One reason being, there is and has already been a debate, and second I think and hope there is going to be a big shift in the run game away from the outside zone and stretch plays keeping it a more downhill power blocking scheme. We saw a shift to that at the end of the season and it looked positive.

So what any of them did in the past doesn't really matter because that would mean a real different style and we have no idea which could be better. But as it stands now, there is no reason to believe any of them will be cut, unless we start bringing in more competition. Ted and Mike have show no shyness in carrying more players at a position. Has kept 3 FB on the roster, 5 TE. 4 Running backs would not be unheard of.

I have mixed feellings. First of all I am a little tired of Ted Thompson picking injured players....Starks. Don't remember if Saine had an injury hx or not. We have caught glimpses of what both these players can do. But like everyone is saying they need to stay healthy.

It will be interesting to see if Ted Thompson picks up a decent back in the draft. If he does, then these two men will have a real fight to stay on the team.
