It really was not all that long ago that the Green Bay Packers had an imposing threat at running back. In both 2008 and 2009, Ryan Grant topped 1,200 yards on the ground, while averaging 6.4 and 7.9 yards per catch out of the backfield, respectively.

But an injury sidelined Grant for almost all of 2010, and the Packers have spent the past three seasons trying to replicate his success. They were closer last year than people may realize — Green Bay finished as a middle-of-the-road rushing team (20th overall) and topped 100 yards on the ground in six of its final eight games, including a playoff loss to San Francisco.

Those numbers, and the Packers’ recent run game in general, might have been even better were it not for repeated injury woes. Not only did the Packers lose Grant three seasons back, but also Alex Green tore his ACL in 2011, James Starks dealt with myriad problems and Cedric Benson was sidelined by a Lisfranc injury in 2012. Even incoming rookie Eddie Lacy is trying to prove that toe surgery in 2012 will not hinder him going forward.

Football is just more fun to watch when your team has a running game that doesn't totally suck shit. I can't wait to feel some confidence on 3rd and short.

Football is more fun to watch when your team WINS!

Running game v. Passing game kinda reminds me of Respect v. Love in a relationship hahahaha. You gotta respect a great running game kinda like a plain but loyal devoted girl who cooks up a storm and takes good care of you in a variety of ways. The Passing game? I guess I don't have to say what that is hahahaha. Stat whore minus stat hahahaha.

Of course, if you can have BOTH, then you indeed are among the fortunate VERY VERY few.

More specifically, it keeps the defense honest and makes the play-action pass, the screen and even the draw weapons again. Third and short, of course, is a lot more makeable, but thrid and 4 or even 5 is no longer automatically a pass...it allows a lot more flexibility in the play calling and in Rodgers' ability to read the defense and change the play on the fly with confidence if it looks like they are overplaying the pass.

IMO just because grant got 1200 yards rushing doesn't mean our run game was that good - he still liked running into the Oline and stopping for 1-2 yards ...
Mike McCarthy just kept plugging away and 'wasting' plays on keeping the D honest ...

Now Im hoping we actually have a run game that will keep the D fearful.

The best part about having a run game is that hopefully Aaron Rodgers won't have to do the running for a first on 3rd down. You have to love that! Now he will only run when he has 20 yards of open turf in front of him and he will take 12 and step out of bounds.

that is freakin awesome.

1200 yards is a 75 yard per game average. That is not great that is adequate. GB has been so bad for so long it just looks great/awesome.
The new standard for greatness should be 1500 yards a game. But then it is a passing game these days so rbs get fewer chances to carry the rock. So by default maybe 1200 is the gold standard. Some day they rb will go the way of the fb and we will see more Canadian style offenses. [puke]

People too quickly forget how good Grant was. For two and a half seasons after he took over the starting job, he was the best back in football not named Adrian Peterson.

Zero2Cool (now) : Bahahahahahahha GO PACK GO!!!!
Zero2Cool (now) : when you're buying your Super Bowl LI Champion gear, be critical of that too!
Zero2Cool (1m) : keep trying to diminish what the Packers have done and ...
Zero2Cool (1m) : one... that's just how it goes. They let the players play. But go ahead
Zero2Cool (1m) : Everyone knows on the hail mary type passes, those little shoves won't be called. Think replacement refs 2012. So, no did not get away with
Dulak (13m) : ya I think they mentioned that U U ... but you see this alot - even in the dallas game they pushed off at least 1 time (they as in dallas)
uffda udfa (6h) : Just rewatched Cobbs hail mary catch in slo mo...he should've been flagged for OPI. Got away with one.
uffda udfa (8h) : Nope. I like Gus.
beast (9h) : Did you want Anthony Lynn as HC? Cushion Bradley was going to follow Lynn where ever.
uffda udfa (10h) : Gus Bradley is new DC in SD/LA. I would've loved to had him here in Green Bay.
uffda udfa (14h) : It's just fine.
musccy (14h) : 5 questionable Packers, none for Falcons. Not good.
uffda udfa (14h) : Jordy not listed as OUT or DOUBTFUL. Questionable on injury report.
uffda udfa (15h) : This is the 6th straight game we've faced someone for the 2nd time. We learn.
uffda udfa (15h) : Aaron: I like our role. I like our chances. (said he relishes being an underdog)
uffda udfa (15h) : Aaron alludes to fake crowd noise at Georgia Dome for Sunday.
uffda udfa (16h) : So, to recap. Losing streak "just the way it is", winning streak "astronomical feat". #Balanced
uffda udfa (16h) : Ironically, he called the turn around "astronomical" not just the way it is in the NFL. #Don'tMissTheIrony
uffda udfa (16h) : Ted tells Demovsky the Packers weren't underachieving when 4-6. Just the way it is in the NFL????
Zero2Cool (20h) : Only time I recall getting annoyed is when they beat a single topic over and over and over.
Pack93z (20h) : Most yes... Heller seems to get it more so... diversity in his coverage... but seemingly can highlight the pressing issues properly.
Zero2Cool (21h) : I'm kind of in the boat that they all are babblying boonies.
Pack93z (21h) : God bless it... Bill Michaels can be a stubborn SOB at times... love his Packers coverage, still think he is a buffoon at times.
Zero2Cool (21h) : Jordy Nelson Named PFWA Comeback Player of the Year
Zero2Cool (23h) : Carter is predicitng the end is in ATL for Packers.
Porforis (23h) : Or I could just completely miss the part where that was Cris Carter.
Porforis (23h) : Careful there. Don't you want to predict a Packers loss just in case?
Zero2Cool (23h) : @criscarter80 :Every fairy tale comes to an end, and this is where the magic carpet ride stops in the ATL.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : McCarthy: "JC Tretter actually had surgery Tuesday. He won't be available this week"
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Crosby is fine now. Full Participant in practice Thursday
Porforis (20-Jan) : What I'm more worried about at this point is WR injuries and Crosby being sick. Who'd be the backup if Crosby can't go?
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : We do have hope. Our secondary has improved. Also, he had to throw 80% to get 1 point up. That won't happen again.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : I like to tease sometimes.
uffda udfa (20-Jan) : Only 80%? :). We lost by one given that stat? Wish we had hope of tightening up.
uffda udfa (20-Jan) : Z, u should tell everyone who Quintorris is. Quintorris Lopez Jones, better known as Julio.
