Green Bay --- The Packers have informed Desmond Bishop that they will release the inside linebacker today, a source said.

Desmond Bishop just tweeted: "So much fun, so many memories & friendships forged in Green Bay. Ups & downs, wins & losses! Even a XLV championship. Forever grateful #Pack"

Last week, word out of Green Bay was that the Packers were going to release linebacker Desmond Bishop if they were unable to work out a restructured contract or trade that would bring them something back in return. The Packers have struck out on both fronts and Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports

It really is a shame. I know it is a more what have you done for me lately league and we are paying others in the LB core a lot already, but I was really hoping a deal could be worked. I really like Bishop and his intensity. I do worry about lingering injuries though and I think that was just too much of a risk considering the money and term length he was desiring. Still I would rather have him in our LB core than Brad Jones...

Yeah, it's a damn shame. I was more upset about it when the news of it "probably" happening came out, but considering the injury thing and the money thing, it's probably for the best. Manning and maybe Mulumba better come through, because a steady diet of Hawk and B. Jones will starve the team for good D.

Linebacker Desmond Bishop is officially a free agent. “It’s not necessarily over,” Bishop said. “There’s an outside chance that I could still be a Packer. So we still have a good relationship. … If I don’t get the right compensation, I’d rather be in a familiar place.”

Just heard about this. It sounds like they departed on good terms. He apparently wasn't willing to take a paycut...at least not yet. I'm thinking that the Packers are still leery of the injury.

Bishop is 28 so he's past his prime and coming off a bad hamstring injury. I thought Tommie Harris was going to be a monster then he had a bad hamstring injury.

Good Point with the Tommie Harris reference. Hopefully other teams will be just as leery as the Packers, and Bishop will take a Hawk-like deal. I'm not holding my breath, though. Probably somebody will pay what he wants.

I don't like it, but our defense was awful, so many must pay. They played poorly, as a unit, for several years. Ted invested a great deal (imo) to get a great unit. He failed to get one. Maybe he can fix it in the 2014 draft. [laughing] Maybe our hopes will survive and spring eternal... these are all possibilities...

Maybe I'm right and this model does not work. I don't like getting rid of Bishop. He's the only one I liked out of all those wasted draft picks. Almost incredidible, how bad it has been, at that position...draft-pick-wise...

The pass D was better without him.

Ranked 4th in passer rating allowed last year.

I'm a big Desmond Bishop fan, but from a pure business standpoint, this makes some sense. They are playing the odds on whether or not he can return healthy and as effective as prior to the injury, and as much as I want the old Bish back, I can see how they arrived at this decision.

The guy knows how to play. Tough loss for GB.

"Bishop said in a phone interview that the team never discussed the idea of him taking a pay cut, saying only that they would check back with him down the road if he were released and didn't find work elsewhere. "

I need someone to make sense of this for me. No, we won't offer you a lower deal, but hey if no one else wants you, then we can talk? Is that just an angle to get him on the dirt cheap?

Absolutely. Ted has a strong history of letting his guys test the market to determine their true value. And, he's apparently OK with losing a Des Bishop coming off a career threatening injury should MIN decide again to overpay.

I found an interesting history on ruptured hamstrings in the NFL from a study in the American Journal of Orthopedics

Quote:

AJO looked at 10 hamstring ruptures in the NFL from 1990-2008. Nine of 10 returned, but only five of 10 returned to play more than one game.

Quote:
Two of the 10 returned and soon after suffered other serious injury to the same leg (Achilles tendon tear, another ruptured hamstring)

AJO's finding on ruptured hamstring in the NFL: "This injury is a marker for elite-level physical deterioration.

Well, they just saved 3. whatever million in cap space that they can now use to lock up Raji, Burnett, and Shields. Bishop is a plodder run stuffing inside linebacker who lacks the athleticism to cover the new age tight ends in a passing league. They'll check back with him later if he hasn't been picked up by anybody else yet. That means they've done him a favor to catch on with another team, and if he can't do so - the Packers will bring him back to training camp. Now was that so hard?

buckeyepackfan (17h) : Smokey you can't lose something you never had.
buckeyepackfan (17h) : Packers receive 4 comp picks for 2018. 4th, 2-5ths, 6th
Smokey (23h) : Peters to the Rams
Smokey (23h) : and another player is lost to another team. Deja Vu again !
Nonstopdrivel (22-Feb) : should have done*

TheKanataThrilla (21-Feb) : I guess I should have did a refresh when I walked away from the computer.
TheKanataThrilla (21-Feb) : Peters is 25 with one year left on his contract at just over $3M
Zero2Cool (21-Feb) : Mel Kiper sticks with Marcus Davenport to GB in 2nd mock
Zero2Cool (21-Feb) : As for Marcus Peters, how old is he an what's his contract years left?
Zero2Cool (21-Feb) : Packers got tired of Sitton's antics.
Zero2Cool (21-Feb) : Sitton was released not because of play or salary, but personality. He will not be re-signed.
TheKanataThrilla (21-Feb) : If we are planning on possibly cutting Cobb I can see the 2nd round pick. A second round pick for Peters is a pretty good deal.
Smokey (21-Feb) : I'd offer Cobb + a 3rd round pick + a 6th round pick in 2019 for the CB Peters from KC.
TheKanataThrilla (21-Feb) : I guess that is a highter round pick
TheKanataThrilla (21-Feb) : Suggestion was a 2nd round pick. I would want a lower round pick. I think that is too much. A 3rd or 4th seems about right.
Smokey (21-Feb) : Cobb and WHAT PICK ?
TheKanataThrilla (21-Feb) : A suggestion I saw was a trade of Cobb and a Pick for Peters. I think that would be a great move.
Smokey (21-Feb) : Sitton was drafted be GB in 2008, not a young man at this point, but still is a "bear" of a man.
Cheesey (21-Feb) : Sitton? Maybe if the price is right.
Cheesey (21-Feb) : I doubt the Packers would try to resign Sutton. But who knows? If the price is right?
Zero2Cool (20-Feb) : Bears declining option on Josh Sitton. He'll be Free Agent.
Zero2Cool (20-Feb) : Chiefs CB Marcus Peters trade rumors -- come to Packers!
