GREEN BAY -- If Mike Neal's latest injury -- and yes, the Green Bay Packers hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker knows with his injury history, he will have doubters -- only sidetracks him briefly, then this could wind up being the end of his bad luck in that department.

That's because Neal, who was listed at 294 pounds on the Packers' official roster before camp began and was on the sheet at 285 pounds while he stood and watched Friday's training camp-opening practice, said he is actually weighing in at 275 pounds. And he admitted Friday that the never-ending work in the weight room that bulked him up to play defensive line may have been the reason he's been hurt so much.

Neal opened camp on the active/physically unable to perform list with a pulled abdominal muscle, and coach Mike McCarthy said he expects Neal to miss "a couple weeks" as a result.

Nevertheless, the weight loss and pseudo-position change could do Neal a world of good.

"Some people, you just look at them, they're just built completely different," Neal said. "I'd like to say that at 294 I was really explosive, and that's not really good because if you've got all that muscle, you're pulling too much on tendons and stuff like that. And I've had tendon and ligament injuries. I mean, I've looked at it and I know it's one of those things. You're 300 pounds, but you can move a little bit faster than them. But, you're doing a lot of pulling and yanking on stuff that you shouldn't. The loss of weight will definitely be better on my body.

"It's more natural for me to be this weight, I feel better at this weight, I think I utilize my abilities better at this weight. They've given me the option to play around with it and (said), 'Where do you feel comfortable at?' They told me I didn't have to lose any, but if I wanted to, they'd see how I moved. It was up to me, how I felt.""

Cripes he only weighs 274? Since it seems he cut down on muscle mass, does he even have the size to play dline anymore?

Datone is undersized too.

Hope Jolly's got something left.

But isn't Neals calling card his strength? If he's lost mostly muscle is there anything left to his game? Well either way I hope he picks up a little bit of speed.

TT is trying to add D linemen, but it seems like he's drafting bobcats and trying to build them into mountain lions.

Looking for more tweeners in size to improve the gap integrity against these more athletic QBs and skill players.

Datone is 6'4 and 284 pounds. JJ Watt is 6'5 289 pounds. Brett Keisel is 6'5 285 pounds. Justin Smith is 6'4 285 pounds. He's not "under-sized." He easily has the frame to add a little more weight if desired. He's certainly not "over-sized", but still. He's fine. The Packers need more athletes. Period. Josh Boyd and and Gilbert Pena will be the new "run-stuffer's if both make the roster, in addition to Pickett, Wilson, and to some extent, Raji (and/or perhaps Jolly).

I'm not concerned about Datone's size, at all.

I'd like to add a certain fella who stood at 6' 4" 249 lbs racked up over 70 sacks while playing DE.

I think sometime we get too caught up in arm length, height, weight and forget that heart and intelligence play much larger roles.

Sounds like a great fit, for a 4-3.

Either way, the few players I named are all 3-4 DE's, and there are many more I could have named that are very close to the exact size of Datone. Also, as I said, Datone has the frame to easily add more weight, if need be. But it's not necessary. He's size is a non-factor. Most 3-4 DE's aren't going to be Calais Cambell's, although I certainly wouldn't mind one of them on the Packers.

This is where Johnny Jolly makes this team. Neal may have gotten too much mass for his bone structure, etc., hence, the shift to OLB. I get it.

Datone & Boyd will flourish in this new D. Neal will be playing more situationally. That is my guess. Should be interesting. If he can become more of a rover with size in this 3-4, like James Harrison was in his prime, maybe we have something here with Mike Neal.

The increased weight clearly was adversely effecting his availability, with all those minor injuries.

According to the journal sentinel jones came to camp 10+ lbs heavier than his pro day weight

Yep Jones weighed in at 295 for TC. The guy looks prototypical out there in pictures especially for starting out in sub-packages. He's the real deal guys.

Personally, the opening days of camp are about the most overrated portion of the year.. even more so than OTA's. I am glad he is looking the part to start... but I want to see week 3 and the preseason.. then into the regular season.

Then, I will echo the sentiment that he looks like the real deal.. then he has to carry that over for a season or two.

Just like we are hearing little out of Lacy.. but it will not matter once the hitting starts.. it will be then where the reports, if silent, will become alarming.

Better they at least look the part at some point as opposed to not looking the part from the beginning.

I agree. I am for tweeners to an extent if they have something special but honestly if you want to be a DE in a 3-4 defense, you are going to want to be closing in on 300 pounds.

I wonder if they might be look at Neal as a pass rush specialist type... and move him around at both DE and OLB.

Also Justin Smith and Brett Keisel are listed at 285, which is the same thing Neal is listed at (though he has admitted to be lighter than that), I don't know if the other guys might also be lighter than that.

They're obviously going to be blitzing Neal far more than they're going to be dropping him into coverage, that's for sure.

IF he is able to get himself onto the field.
