As long as it doesn't mess up his punting it is great.
I have one thing to say about the article though.
I love how "So I do give a glance to the stands before a kickoff" becomes "Tim Masthay lets his eyes drift downfield to the end zone, to the goal posts, past the security personnel and the photographers. He eyes the first row of fans, though they're so far away they have indistinguishable faces." I guess that's what makes them writers.

I've heard it asked jokingly; Now I ask seriously, can he kick field goals? Does he have reasonable accuracy? any history of place-kicking? It would save a roster spot if he could multi-task. I am no longer negative about Mason Crosby, but the fact is, he gets paid a lot of money for average kicking. Even if we gave Masthay a hefty raise, there probably would be savings. To me, just because other teams don't do it that way is no reason not to have the same guy do punting, kickoffs, AND place-kicking.

I love seeing the ball at the back of the endzone on kickoffs. Washington returned one when they were 6 yards deep. That was rather silly.

He can kick FG but he is the emergency kicker. Of all the players they had in camp this year he would probably be in the lower half for consistency and accuracy.
BTW- I am not trying to knock him. The only proof I have is if Mike thought he could do the job he would not have brought other kickers in to take a look at them. That and a vague remembrance of a story a few years ago that said his leg is pretty good for distance but he is not an NFL kicker. (FG kicker)
