I agree that above all else it's important to just let it play out. An ACL injury here or a Achilles there and Donald Driver is our #2-3 again (gasp). In my ideal world, however, I want him beat out because that tells me that a younger guy outplayed a player that was already pretty good, thereby improving the team (and special teams), theoretically. I only think this is an option for Driver because I don't think Jones or Nelson can be beat out by any exterior player currently on the roster (although perhaps we have another Donald Driver in training somewhere with one of these guys?). I had the same opinion near the end of Farve's career, especially after the preseason and Dallas game. True, Rodger's was almost totally unproven, but I thought ultimately he was better than Favre at that point in their respective careers and only had room to get better, while the exact opposite was true for Favre. This is despite all of Favre's "leadership" or "experience" he may have brought to the table. As a I said earlier, an old leader leaving only makes room for another to step up in his place. Also, I must admit, I'm giving Ted the benefit of the doubt in some ways, too, because he is as good as they come in evaluating wide receivers. If Ted really likes Gurley and any other of those guys, I trust that they have potential to be significant contributors, even if it's not much outside of special teams.

I want him to come back pretty badly. We will see how the business end plays out.

If i didn't think DD still had "it", i'd say let him go. But i really think he's still a darn good player. He's not afraid to go across the middle, and is dependable when thrown to.
Better to have too many good WR's then not enough. And it seems he's willing to take a pay cut.

That's what I think. If I had to slap money down, I'd bet Driver stays in 2012.

UDFAs rarely make the team. Drafted people are more likely to make the team.

Yeah, I still have a hard time imagining a situation where Driver makes this team in 2012 beyond some early injuries at the position.

That may be part of the reason our defense was so bad last year. Much of the draft since Raji and CM3 was on offense. Not complaining since we needed those players also, just saying that's the way it worked out.
