Why do all NFL players seem to play Baseball or Golf?

In addition to their NFL job? It seems like half the players on our team (and probably many others) love to go golfing, or failing that, playing baseball.
And they're not slouches either, with very low handicaps (didn't Longwell have a handicap of like, 1.6 or something?). I don't understand. |

It's easy......they can AFFORD it. Golf can be VERY expensive. I play, but only at the little par 3 course called "Missing Links" in Mequon. It's a 9 hole course, and only $7 to play 9 holes, or play it twice for $10. Why do you think doctors play so much? They can AFFORD it. The average guy with a family can't shell out $75 a couple times a week to play. They might get to go a few times a year. But that makes it hard to become any good at it. Anyone that doesn't even have to THINK about the money part, can play as often as they like, and probably will get good at it. JMO of course. |

Anyone that plays golf can tell you there isn't a game that is more addicting or self challenging than GOLF. It takes up way to much of my free time and if i had more free time i would golf more. BTW Cheesey i golfed Erin Hills last week and it was $165 for 18 holes...lol |

In fact, i have only played 3 times at Missing Links. It's a par 3, 9 holes. So par is 27. I had a 45 my first time, 48 the second, and 39 the last time. Being a beginner, i don't feel too bad about those scores. I doubt i will EVER get to play a "real" golf course. WAY too much money for me. I'd have to save up a whole year just to play ONCE! |

Also, you don't have to spend that much money to play a decent course. Some of the Milwaukee County courses like Currie and Lincoln are reasonable in terms of price and aren't too challenging. |

My man Donald Driver (thanks to Pack93z for the pic) 2010 will be seen as the beginning of the new Packers dynasty. |

Don't you have to be a Milwaukee county resident to get the cheap price though? I'm in Ozaukee county. And yes.....Missing links is a challenge. Not many flat spots there. LOTS of hills and water. Zombie........i used to think that too. Till i tried it. It's not an easy sport. But it's challenging and believe it or not, a good workout. |

And that when i hit it REAL good. |

Playing with any older golfers they will 150 yard a long hitter to death with consistant play down the middle. Short game is where the scoring is done and over half your shots on most holes are within 40 yards of the green. If i get to the green bay area i would love to hit the links with you and get to know you better...my treat. It would be a blast talking packers and golfin. |

golf is all about chalenging yourself and also being able to play someone competively regardless of their skill. Is is the hardest sport to excel at.
Baseball players swing and the golf swing are incredibly similar. The spine angle is different that is all. The golf swing is a throwing motion much like throwing a baseball or football, hence the good golfing QB's.
you can play it til you drop and not worry about getting injured from it. Most Athletes are good at any sport they play without much of an effort. Golf really brings out the competitiveness in them. |

Thats true. I'm VERY competitive. I don't care if i lose, but i give it my best shot at whatever i try. I don't think i'll ever be good at golf, but it's fun trying! |

Personally I think golf is awesome and I so wish I had the money to play it as a child. Then again playing hockey most of my life the swing between those two sports are incredibly similar which is why hockey players also tend to be avid golfers.
Most of the points have already been raised that pro athletes: a) can afford it b) are competitive and golf is extremely challenging mentally c) relatively risk free activity when it comes to injuries
I also wouldn't be surprised that because contracts are now limiting much of athletes offseason activities golf is probably one of the few things that they can enjoy without jeapordizing their contracts. |
