When the Green Bay Packers step onto the field at Lucas Oil Stadium, rookie Jerron McMillian is aware he'll be tracing the footsteps that another compact safety with loads of potential made years before him.

Growing up, McMillian watched Indianapolis' Bob Sanders pound opponents into submission while also proving that a box-type safety could play reliable pass coverage. Sanders was plagued by injuries and though he won the 2007 defensive player of the year award, his career wasn't what it could have been.

The 5-11, 203-pound McMillian enters the game Sunday against the Colts as a fast riser in coordinator Dom Capers' scheme and he's trying to prove that another guy built to play near the line of scrimmage can cover receivers and running backs.

"I liked the way he came to play," McMillian said. "He showed that size means nothing in this game. The way he played and how instinctive he was . . . (he could) come up and support the run and still able to play deep, regardless how tall he was."

McMillian, who is 3 inches taller than Sanders, showed how much confidence Capers has in him when Capers drew up a defense that matched him up against New Orleans scat back Darren Sproles. The Packers had been chewed up by Sproles the year before and Capers needed someone who could handle him.

"It was fun, but it's work, too," McMillian said. "There's so many routes he runs, and he's so quick. I just knew where my help was. At first, in my mind I was wondering like, 'Why, what's the reason it's me?'

"But sometimes it's (because) I'm able to do a lot of things, that's how my game is. If they need me in the box doing something creative I don't mind doing that."

McMillian, who replaced M.D. Jennings as the nickel safety after Week 1, offers a lot because not only is he big enough to play the run, he's quick. His time of 6.69 seconds in the three-cone agility run was the best of any safety timed at the scouting combine in March.

Three weeks ago against Chicago, McMillian picked off quarterback Jay Cutler and two weeks ago against Seattle, McMillian laid out and deflected a pass on third down that would have gone for a first down. He also picked off a tipped ball, but the play was nullified because of a roughing the passer call.

There have been mistakes, too. (read more)

McMillian is young and he is learning. I can't day he will be a starter in a year or two because he is already on the field 78% of the time. He is a starter right now. He may move from the nickle to one of the other safety positions when Sir Charles rides off to Canton. Then again maybe they will draft another stud to fill that spot and let Mac continue to play nickle.

uffda udfa (7h) : Guion suspension upheld...lost for 3 games
uffda udfa (8h) : He works boundary...great body control...great feet...goes deep...runs well...is strong. Jordy Clone, maybe.
uffda udfa (8h) : Tell me he doesn't remind you of 87...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zPZNolFvPI
Zero2Cool (8h) : Only thing that matters : 40 Yrd Dash: 4.54
uffda udfa (8h) : Butler is 6'2 215...Hmmm, wonder what TT has in mind. Ha.
uffda udfa (8h) : TT went out and got us Jordy's replacement...James Butler...not even a camp invite.
uffda udfa (16h) : I knew what you were saying and I loved it! From a production standpoint it was worse than college radio. It had Aaron which made it worth
Zero2Cool (17h) : I wouldn't know good radio if it sat on my face, but I know what I find informational and worthwhile. Tuesday with Aaron, was both.
Zero2Cool (17h) : I am saying my zero experience in radio > your whatever years. :D Bahahahahah
uffda udfa (17h) : Ha! Yeah, I only was involved in making good radio for 8 years. Don't know a thing.
Zero2Cool (18h) : Yeah, I'm not surprised I know good radio better than you. Not a big deal, you have your strengths, radio isn't one.
uffda udfa (27-Aug) : We have very different tastes. I worked in radio for many years. Thought the show was so much worse than it needed to be.
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : NFL Pick'em v2.0 is here!
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : Wilde was great choice and if not for Jason's rapport with Aaron, never would have happened.
uffda udfa (26-Aug) : I never caught it live...listened to podcast a few times. Wilde was the wrong guy for that show.
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : That was poorly worded, my mistake. I was regular, it was great peak into his life. Planned meetings around it lol
uffda udfa (26-Aug) : As for Tuesday's with Aaron I did listen, but I wasn't a regular.
Smokey (26-Aug) : Anyone seen Polargrizzz lately, he's AWOL !
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : If you listened to them, Aaron urged them to go past the 10 minutes. Jason would be an idiot to cut it off.
uffda udfa (26-Aug) : The contract stated 10 minutes but the show always went longer. Sounds like 540 took advantage and perhaps he got sick of it.
uffda udfa (26-Aug) : As for Aaron's radio show, sounds like he just didn't want to do it and they took too much of his time. Was only supposed to be 10 minutes.
Smokey (26-Aug) : Don't worry, be WR happy !
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : WR!!
uffda udfa (25-Aug) : LeRoy Butler and Finley want TT to add a WR. Silverstein wrote a piece on it, including Rison mention. Let's get this!
uffda udfa (25-Aug) : The WHY is the big story, but that hasn't come out yet.
Zero2Cool (25-Aug) : noooooooooooooooooooo!
Zero2Cool (25-Aug) : Aaron is done? Why????
uffda udfa (25-Aug) : If you liked "Tuesday's with Aaron" he's not doing it this year. He's done.
Zero2Cool (23-Aug) : Tolzien being evaluated for concussion. What?
hardrocker950 (23-Aug) : wow... what a joke
dhazer (23-Aug) : Cheese heads are everywhere donot be sureprised ifor we are louder
Zero2Cool (23-Aug) : And you're wearing a Ben jersey... sad!
dhazer (23-Aug) : Hello from Heinz field
dhazer (23-Aug) : Anyone else going to be at the big ketchup bottle of Heinz Field
Mucky Tundra (23-Aug) : TEBOW!
