Can compensatory picks be traded? If so, it seems like they would settle this before the league year starts.

Like the article states, it's most likely one 4th round pick for Flynn, with Wells and Saturday cancelling eachother out.

Next year we could very well get a 3rd and a 5th for Jennings and Walden, respectively.

What about 5th and 7th for Jones and Crabtree?

No one knows exactly how these picks get awarded, but this much is known.

They go by how big a contract the player leaving your team signed, minus the free agents your team has signed. The FA your teams signed scratch away the leaving player with the same salary, if that's not possible with a lower salary, and if that's not possible with a higher salary.

Players who barely make any money (relatively, of course) don't get compensated for.

A 7th for Crabtree is quite possible, though.

Brad Jones hasn't yet signed with anyone, for as far as I know, so you can't really say anything about that just yet.

Right now it'd look like:

3rd (for Jennings)
5th (for Walden)
7th (for Crabtree)

And that, of course, is if we don't sign anyone, ourselves.

Which will allow Ted to take our regular picks and trade back until he has every pick of round 7.

Some guy (who loves math and code breaking) figured out the formula the NFL used for Comp picks and he used to release a list before the NFL would.... he wouldn't share what the formula was though and I think he's stop doing it. But he did say the biggest factor in the formula was money per year of the new contract the FA got.

NFL has said they also factor some in number of games played in the new year and post season honors, among a lot of other stuff too.

I think based on money per year, both Wells and Flynn should of got a 4th round pick. BUT they also signed Saturday which knocks the Wells pick down, to probably a 6th at best (and maybe worse like 7th or no pick).

Then you have to factor in that both Wells (injury) and Flynn (back-up) missed a lot of games which hurt, and Saturday (questionably) made the pro-bowl (post season honor) which all hurts the Packers comp pick.

I'm hoping, Flynn money per year was still so high that hopefully that stays a 4th even with the hit of him not playing a lot.

But the double hit on the Wells one with little games and Saturday... I'm guessing that's probably going to be a 7th or no comp pick...

My guess is 4th and 7th this year...

I'm thinking
best case is 4th and 6th.
worse case 5th only.

Ted's going to have a hell of a time in turning that into three 7th rounders, but I'll be he tries!

Just kidding. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised to see him package it to trade up if there is a guy they are looking to get.

You cannot trade compensatory picks. He can trade the original 5th rounder I guess though.

I've learned over the years to take the round most speculated as the slot for our comp pick(s), and lower it by 1 so as to not be disappointed.

A 5th. Ugh. OK.... Ted can get a fine player there, if he'd just take one!

He's actually done better in R6... But I hold out hope for Manning and Quarless, who I really liked prior to his injury.

I guess we can thank Russell Wilson for that. If not for him Flynn is the starter and we probably get a minimum of a 4th and maybe even a 3rd if he does half as well with the Seahawks as Wilson did.

Giacomini is a starting offensive lineman for the Seahawks. Perhaps wasn't the right player for the Packers at the time, but it doesn't mean he isn't any good.

Hey rabidgopher,

I wasn't trying to imply that overall, but there are some huge duds in there. I think Quarless and Giacomini are the best of his 5th round picks, and I am hoping Manning tops them both this season.

TT's comp pick history is interesting.

Sitton and Newhouse are starters. Moll started some in his time here.

House and McMillian have some nice potential.

Tollefson and Harris didn't last long with the Packers but both were still in the NFL last year. Tollefson as a pass rush specialist. And Harris just got resigned to a 5 year deal as the Bengals long snapper. Which is pretty good seeing as they were 7th round comp picks.

7th DE Dave Tollefson
