When the Packers only offered the original round tender to restricted free agent Evan Dietrich-Smith — as of now, the team's leading candidate to start at center — I was a little puzzled. In Dietrich-Smith's case, "original round' meant any team that wanted to sign him would not have to surrender a draft pick as [...]

I don't necessarily see that as a cool reception. We did sign him, and he is projected, I think, as the starting center. The Packers just calculated - correctly as it turns out - that other teams wouldn't see him as having much value. Whenever you have a development project like EDS, the team doing the developing likely will see him as more valuable than outsiders. Besides, nowadays, most centers are converts from other O Line positions, similar to EDS, and teams can just use what they already have.

EDS has never impressed me and apparently no other team besides the Packers.
Hopefully he will step up and be more than adequate but IMHO center is definitely an area of concern.

I like EDS as depth. As the starter, meh.

I wouldn't put it past him to get beat by Van Roten.

I really hope we aren't settling for mediocrity like EDS at center. He's a marginal starter at best, as are Lang and Newhouse. Lots of good lineman in the draft this year, and it would be shameful if we don't snag a couple.
