The Packers parted ways with one of their opening-week defensive starters from 2012, placing linebacker D.J. Smith on waivers Wednesday. According to the league's official transactions, the 24-year-old Smith was waived with a "failed physical' designation. Smith started the first six games of 2012 at middle linebacker for the Packers, recording 39 tackles. However, he

I did not expect him to make this year's roster. That was a horrific knee injury. I appreciate how solid he was in 2011 reserve role. He did well. Wish him the best!

So, the rumor about bound an determined to get bigger and tougher is true.

So he wasn't big enough or tough enough when we drafted him? Or when he played moderately well in '11? If it really is an injury thing - long term damage, that's one thing, but I bet either this season or next, D.J. Smith resurfaces with some other team and plays solid.

I think both Saine and Smith are injury related cuts.

The Packers gave them the off-season to try and rehab.

This doesn't mean their careers are over, as someone else said, they will probably keep working at getting 100% and will end up on an NFL roster somewhwere.

Timing is everything for these young guys trying to make it.

Who knows what will happen in TC and pre-season, one or both may just end up back with The Packers.

Anybody remember "Whisper" Goodman.

He was cut but stayed in Green bay working out hoping to get another chance, I don't think he was ever resigned, but he stayed in green bay a couple of years hoping to get another shot.

Did you happen to see how the Packers were outmatched in the last two playoff losses? Sometimes, you have to adjust your philosophy. Even Charles Woodson said the Packers need to get BIGGER and FASTER on defense shortly after the 49ers playoff humiliation.

The Packers are going in the right direction. And you can forget any chance of the Packers drafting Five Nine Tryann Mathieu (sp?) too. The guy wasn't even that good. Four interceptions?

Unlike Saine who I expect to get a shot with the Packers when healthy, I don't think DJ will. He just doesn't fit.

He is a Polish Tweener (Too small for LBer to Slow for S)

Signed with the Chargers, already. I guess they saw the same in him as we've been seeing around here.

I really don't understand the move. They can put him on PUP or even IR so he wouldn't have counted against the 53. I just don't see why one of those 80 or whatever off season roster spots is so important that you have to cut a guy who has shown so much potential.

Really, well I guess the failed physical thing was just a reason to let him go.

I really don't understand this move now, Smith performed well when he was in the lineup, looks like Zero might have hit on it this time, Packers want to get bigger and stronger,

Smith didn't fit the mold.

side note......After D.J. Smith plays 6 years in the NFL, and leads the team he plays for in tackles for that time, and misses only 2 games in that same period, then the moronic Smith > Hawk post can be made.

currently GB has 67 players on the roster. (If I counted correctly.)
They had 8 via draft. That's 75.
They add 5 undrafted players. That's 80.
They still have 10 more positions available for TC.

Smith was not released to make room for anyone else. They released him to make room for Jones payday. Confused

I can only tell you what they told us, and that’s they needed to create some space for things they thought was coming. From our perspective, he was ahead of schedule. If you watched the rehab and the conditioning, he was running and lifting. It was curious to us what caused this.

But the phone has been ringing off the hook for him. They did say there’s a possibility that once he’s healthy, that they could bring him back. They just indicated there was something they needed to create some space for.

DJ Smith was making 555,000 you don't really save anything by cutting him since you have to sign a guy to take his place anyways. Cutting him for $$ makes even less sense.

I didn't like the move.

I didn't mean they would free up cap room by releasing him. It frees up on field reps for Jones who is getting paid to pay.

I was neved high on Smith anyway. I saw a player that was decent depth but nothing more. Not a big loss, even if making the big assumption that he returns to pre injury form.

Zero2Cool (5h) : Who the hell gives a shit about Sat/Sun now? 3rd to 7th round? F U
Zero2Cool (5h) : I thought Sat/Sun was great. You make a weekend of it. Have buddies over, cookout, etc.
TheKanataThrilla (6h) : During the afternoons I tend to get caught up in family routines. I don't mind that for the later rounds.
TheKanataThrilla (6h) : I now take Friday off work. It is a bit annoying, but I do find it fun at night as I can crack a few beers and enjoy. Sucks if they trade out of the first round though.
wpr (13h) : I liked the Sat Sun version.
beast (19h) : HELL YEAH! ... the draft was SOOOO MUCH BETTER in the ol Saturday/Sunday format... only people that I've heard disagree are those that don't really follow the draft and just random get updates on thei
beast (19h) : Key word there is "proven"... not if they're true, but if you can prove it. Jerry Jones said the same thing for Greg Hardy, it wasn't "proven".
Zero2Cool (20h) : Flat out honesty from 49ers GM
Zero2Cool (20h) : John Lynch: “if these charges are proven true, if Reuben did hit this young lady, he won’t be part of our organization moving forward.”
Smokey (21h) : 49ers / Bye Week / Rams
Zero2Cool (22h) : Brian Gutekunst: “Draft was way better when it was Saturday and Sunday.”
Zero2Cool (23-Apr) : With pick #14, @CFD22 has the @Packers selecting UTSA DE Marcus Davenport.
Porforis (23-Apr) : He'll probably resort to buying and using Chicago Bears tickets.
Smokey (22-Apr) : Restrict Zero's toilet paper !
buckeyepackfan (22-Apr) : You gonna withhold your monthly dues until Zero gets the schedule posted Smokey? Lol
Smokey (22-Apr) : Zero, please post the new 2018 Packers Schedule. Thank You

Zero2Cool (19-Apr) : Week 1: at Packers — Sept. 9 (SNF)
Cheesey (19-Apr) : I don't know. I don't have HBO. I only have regular BO.
Smokey (19-Apr) : Who is HBO's 2018 "Hard Knocks" team ?
Zero2Cool (17-Apr) : Jimmy Graham on choosing Packers -- Why Green Bay instead of New Orleans? "#12 is hungry
DarkaneRules (17-Apr) : When he talked about missing guys he didn't mentioned Greg Jennings :)
Zero2Cool (17-Apr) : it won't though. thus, off-season = hate season
gbguy20 (17-Apr) : these quotes from arod should shut people up
Zero2Cool (17-Apr) : Jimmy Graham on whether he's still the same Jimmy Graham: "I'm still 6-foot-7 and still run a 4.55 (40)."
Zero2Cool (17-Apr) : TE Jimmy Graham said he turned down a lot of money to sign with a team he said he feels can win it all. “12 is hungry,” he said.
Zero2Cool (17-Apr) : Aaron Rodgers on potential extension with Packers: "There's interest on both sides in getting something done"
Zero2Cool (17-Apr) : "You have to trust the process. And the process works." Aaron Rodgers
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : I think Barkley would be crazy good with Aaron Rodgers.
porky88 (15-Apr) : If the Packers trade into the top 10, I think it's for Saquan Barkley.
buckeyepackfan (15-Apr) : Lololol
buckeyepackfan (15-Apr) : Need to use this statement "The Packers have wasted enough years of AR's career"
