Josh Boyd | Defensive Tackle | Mississippi State | 6'3" - 310 lbs.

STRENGTHS: Josh continually keeps his feet moving while engaged to press the pocket and when chasing ballcarriers down the line. He shows a burst off the line and plays with a low pad level. Maintains leverage and has good awareness to hold his point and then chase down the action with closing burst from behind. He will attack the gaps on zone runs and spin off blocks to get into plays when singled up.

Displays a nice swim move to beat blockers. Not shy with his punch to extend at the point of attack. Carries his weight well and looks comfortable changing directions; frequently asked to drop in space in college.

Boyd shows fluid body control to smoothly redirect his momentum. He is quick-footed and rangy enough to make plays away from the line of scrimmage and flashes the motor to fight through the whistle.

WEAKNESSES: Boyd plays too light at times and struggles with his base strength. His pass rush moves are limited and he is undeveloped as a pass rusher because he rarely gets consistent pressure on the pocket. His average size can be an issue when facing stronger, longer interior offensive linemen. He does move to his sides very well, but lacks agility.

Josh doesn't possess the natural power to do much after his initial move doesn't work. he doesn't display the speed to pursue and Scouts aren’t sold on whether Boyd can be a true 3-technique, meaning he’ll be limited to a one-gap Nose Tackle role.

There's your one-gap nose tackle. Needs to get bigger, but he's got strength. Questions of whether he's athletic enough to play the 3-technique.

But hey, this is the 5th round. You're looking for value at this point. And he fits a need.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

Thank God we added a DT!

BTW, I'm always amazed at how the Strengths and Weaknesses in these reviews often contradict themselves...

At 6-3 310 he ought to be able to add some weight as he develops. Good with the sacks at 8.5 career for a big fella in the middle.

Here Here!

I agree - wynn never belonged in our 3-4 - I think we only brought him back when we got banged up ... wasn't he in our 4-3 the year before we switched?

Wynn is the exact same size as Datone Jones. LOL. In fairness, Jones is more explosive, stronger, quicker. I think they'll bulk him up.

Boyd looks like a project NT, who will replace Pickett next year.

Have they mentioned his ability to play multiple alignments successfully or is going to be a one gap player?

6'3" 305 is not a feather weight.. lol. Lacks the ability to consistently push the pocket.. but it is not because of a lack of size. Note how he plays against the run..
I think when there's enough will and aggression, there's no shortage of talent either.

I am watching some film right now and I love his lateral quickness for a big man. This seems to be the drafting motive at the moment...

The guy has some size, but looks like he can add quite a bit more to his frame. Looks pretty athletic.

Yeah. Ted has not messed around with big fatties just to get big fatties... This Josh Boyd has some speed.

nice pick up. Looks like another guy would can stuff the run. I like GB's chances if they get other teams one dimensional.

I was wondering if Uncle Ted was going to pass on adding another DL. I was glad to see him make the move.
