In the wake of the Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews contract extensions, many of us have been wondering how the Green Bay Packers will utilize their remaining cap space. How they use it will depend a lot on the current players who will be free agency following this season. Not counting the recent restricted free agent tenders and offseason signings, there are a total of fourteen Packers players entering their final year of a multi-year contract.

Thank God for the Datone Jones and Josh Boyd selections! Oh yeah, thank Ted and his scouting dept too. Personally, I doubt that we re-sign any of these players outside of Raji, unless Neal or Wilson have break out seasons.

No one should be expensive. Except Raji maybe. If we lose Neal, Pickett, or Wilson. Losing one of those guys wouldn't be to bad. I have to think it's obviously Pickett.

Perfect timing IMO. Go out and prove your worth it and be rewarded with a much better deal than if they are not retained and have to hunt for a team and find a roster spot.
I predict Neal will stick. I think he will have a very solid year for them.

Pickett's approaching retirement. I'll be surprised if he has much left after this year. Maybe one more year.

Neal has the potential to break out and deserve a new contract. Jolly is unknown, but he's not exactly in a position to negotiate. Who knows, maybe he'll kick some ass, but that remains to be seen. His age is also getting to be up there.

Neal is our best passrusher next to Jones on the line. I agree he will have a big year as well.. Just needs to be healthy. I want him to start this year!

Is Raji a FA after this season? Rotoworld had this for Raji's contract

2013: $4.49 million,
2014: $2.1325 million (Voidable Year),
2015: Free Agent

The big question is... who has control of that voidable year?

If Packers then they're probably going to keep him for that year or use it try to keep his next contract to be lower.

As far as guys the Packers need to resign before the start of 2014...

answer

CB Shields

What's going on with Shields I thought he was a free agent, did he get franchised or something?

Restricted FA, no other teams tried to sign him to an offer sheet so he's a packer for 2013. Will be a FA next year if not signed to a long term deal as far as I know.

As earthquake said, Shields is a Restricted FA (because he's not a vet (4 years) until next year)... (and D-Smith was a FA).

I think the Packers put a 2nd round tender on him, meaning if another team signed him the Packers could match the contract and/or get that teams 2nd round pick (next year?... I think) ...

But no one signed him...

RFAs normally get offered and sign one year deals until they become UFA (unrestricted FA) which will be next season for Shields (and D-Smith)

I think D-Smith signed his one year offer... Shields as far as I know hasn't as of yet... but no other teams can sign him no more.

So Shields has to sign with the Packers or nobody.

Some rumors that Ted Thompson tried to get a long term deal done with D-Smith and Shields before going after the Rodgers and Matthews contract and some rumors the Packers are looking into maybe a long term deal with Raji as well but nothing has looked like it will get done soon but the Packers still could as they got some cap room left over so it could. Just have to wait and see...

Most likely Shields will sign his one year offer sooner or later, unless the Packers are offering him a long term deal that he likes more.

The next big thing on the horizon is a Raji contract - or not. I'm conflicted on this. No way IMO Raji is anywhere near the same level of priority as Rodgers and Matthews. He has been a colossal disappointment. However, he does or did have a lot of potential. It would be an all out shame to let him go and have him play for somebody else the way I and others expected him to play for the Packers. I'm looking for the Packers to re-sign him for something a lot less than a max contract.

Neal is another fairly high potential player that I hope we can keep for a reasonable amount. I agree with the guy who said having Jones should help Neal as a pass rusher - assuming he can finally stay healthy.

It wouldn't bother me to see Pickett go; Same for Wilson.

So get rid of the low potential guys, who beat out the high potential guys for starting spots..... but keep the high potential guys who couldn't earn a starting spot when they had to compete for it?

Interesting....

I want to keep the best guys for the job... and a lot of that has to do with scheme. The high potential guys failed to get the job done in the aggressive scheme so the Packers changed the scheme last year to a more traditional 3-4 scheme which helped the low potential guys.

The Packers old aggressive scheme asked for the DE to attack more and get into the back-up and mess things up while leaving the LB to fight the OL running up field on run blocks more often and having to try to fend them off while also trying to go make a play. Well that was falling, as the DEs weren't making the plays nor where the LB able to fend off the blocks well enough (other than Matthews).

So the Packers went to the more traditional 3-4 scheme which asked the DEs to act more like the NT and run clog in case of run first and pass rush second. Which slows up the OL and DL... but it protects the LBers letting them flow to the action, get to the ball and attack faster....

Pickett and Wilson started because they did well at this. And were successful were none of the DEs were being successful in the old scheme.

On to Raji... in college Raji was very successful at rushing up the field in full attack mode not asked to worry about anything other than getting to the person with the ball and getting them to the ground. And he was GREAT at that. Problem is that he doesn't have the length needed for 3-4 DE to do that... and the NT (in almost all 3-4 schemes) has to run clog first, pass rush second.

So in the 3-4 base, can't use Raji at his best in the base 3-4 scheme which sucks. Though one would think Raji would get better at run clogging, but he seem to still has a lot to learn there. 49ers OL ran over him.

Though Raji can still do his thing in the 2-4 nickel and dime packages which basically is a 4-2 with two stand 3-4 OLB acting like 4-3 DEs. But since Jenkins left, it seems like Raji gets stopped on one on ones too often... and Jenkins being there or not being there shouldn't effect Raji in one on ones... but Raji has seemed to get worse in his pass rushing all around for what ever reason. I've heard some think Jenkins getting sack #s pushed Raji to go harder trying to keep up... and it was a mental thing. I don't know... but he doesn't seem the same even one on one.

What's wrong with Raji? All they do is overplay him, wear him down and play him out of position. Dude still shows up every week and gets it done.

Yeah, I suppose. It's just that coming out of college, I expected great things from him - toughness, a dominant guy in the middle of the line, and he hasn't come close to that. As frustrated as I get seeing him pushed back and single-blocked, I guess I'd like to see them re-sign him, but not for anywhere near the money Matthews got.

I think the guy that wrote this article doesn't know much about the cap. The Packers could easily keep all three of these guys at fair market prices will contracts structured right. I'm just not sure they should pay a fair market price for Raji - possibly the same with James Jones.

Edit: wrong article. There was comments here about Raji, Shields, and Jones, and I was thinking of something I read that we couldn't keep all three.

We can keep all of them. Raji can play one more year without getting a contract, I bet they wanna see if he can play up to the money. Jones is already signed. Shields will more than likely not cost as much, maybe up to Jones standard, a little more. For as good as the kid has been lately he's been inconsistent but still deserves money.
