There will be several new rules this year, most with a focus on enhancing player safety. Player safety has been a priority for several years now, both in terms of new rules and rules enforcement. The NFL coordinates with the NCAA in these efforts. By sharing information, we can both learn from each other. One area of attention for both the NFL and the NCAA has been protection of the defenseless player. Since the NCAA cannot fine their players, it is often more challenging for them to change player behavior. For this reason, the NCAA added a rule this year that permits officials to immediately expel a player from a game for hitting a defenseless player in the head.

In the NFL, the new rule that’s received the most attention is the rule that prohibits a runner or tackler from initiating forcible contact by delivering a blow with the top or crown of his helmet when both players are clearly outside the tackle box. This rule is part of a larger effort to eliminate the use of the helmet as a weapon. Some people have expressed concern that the new rule may be called too often. It will be interesting to see how it is officiated, but I don’t think it will be called too frequently, since, for the foul to be called, a player must line up his opponent, lower his head and deliver a forcible blow with the crown of the helmet. There are several other new unnecessary roughness adjustments, including that defensive players are now prohibited from pushing down lineman into the offensive formation, the snapper on PATs and field goal attempts will now be considered a defenseless player, and the peel back block is now illegal anywhere in the field of play. Some have suggested that a quarterback running the read option should be afforded the same protection as a quarterback in the pocket. NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino recently stated that on the read-option play, the quarterback only has the protection of a runner.

A big change this year is that all players, with the exception of punters and kickers, will be required to wear thigh and knee pads. NFL players were required to wear these pads up until mid-1990s. The rule was dropped then because it was difficult to enforce. With the increased focus on player safety, the Competition Committee decided two years ago to reinstate the rule. Players will be removed from the game if they do not have the required pads.

The last two rule changes are non-safety related. The tuck rule is dead. If a quarterback tucks the ball and loses control of it, it is now a fumble. Finally, if a coach erroneously throws a challenge flag, the play will now be reviewed. The coach’s team will be charged a timeout, and if they are out of timeouts, it will be assessed as a 15 yard penalty.

i hate the tuck rule. glad it is gone.

beast (22m) : Did you want Anthony Lynn as HC? Cushion Bradley was going to follow Lynn where ever.
uffda udfa (1h) : Gus Bradley is new DC in SD/LA. I would've loved to had him here in Green Bay.
uffda udfa (5h) : It's just fine.
musccy (5h) : 5 questionable Packers, none for Falcons. Not good.
uffda udfa (5h) : Jordy not listed as OUT or DOUBTFUL. Questionable on injury report.
uffda udfa (6h) : This is the 6th straight game we've faced someone for the 2nd time. We learn.
uffda udfa (6h) : Aaron: I like our role. I like our chances. (said he relishes being an underdog)
uffda udfa (6h) : Aaron alludes to fake crowd noise at Georgia Dome for Sunday.
uffda udfa (7h) : So, to recap. Losing streak "just the way it is", winning streak "astronomical feat". #Balanced
uffda udfa (7h) : Ironically, he called the turn around "astronomical" not just the way it is in the NFL. #Don'tMissTheIrony
uffda udfa (7h) : Ted tells Demovsky the Packers weren't underachieving when 4-6. Just the way it is in the NFL????
Zero2Cool (11h) : Only time I recall getting annoyed is when they beat a single topic over and over and over.
Pack93z (11h) : Most yes... Heller seems to get it more so... diversity in his coverage... but seemingly can highlight the pressing issues properly.
Zero2Cool (12h) : I'm kind of in the boat that they all are babblying boonies.
Pack93z (12h) : God bless it... Bill Michaels can be a stubborn SOB at times... love his Packers coverage, still think he is a buffoon at times.
Zero2Cool (12h) : Jordy Nelson Named PFWA Comeback Player of the Year
Zero2Cool (14h) : Carter is predicitng the end is in ATL for Packers.
Porforis (14h) : Or I could just completely miss the part where that was Cris Carter.
Porforis (14h) : Careful there. Don't you want to predict a Packers loss just in case?
Zero2Cool (14h) : @criscarter80 :Every fairy tale comes to an end, and this is where the magic carpet ride stops in the ATL.
Zero2Cool (14h) : McCarthy: "JC Tretter actually had surgery Tuesday. He won't be available this week"
Zero2Cool (15h) : Crosby is fine now. Full Participant in practice Thursday
Porforis (16h) : What I'm more worried about at this point is WR injuries and Crosby being sick. Who'd be the backup if Crosby can't go?
Zero2Cool (16h) : We do have hope. Our secondary has improved. Also, he had to throw 80% to get 1 point up. That won't happen again.
Zero2Cool (16h) : I like to tease sometimes.
uffda udfa (16h) : Only 80%? :). We lost by one given that stat? Wish we had hope of tightening up.
uffda udfa (16h) : Z, u should tell everyone who Quintorris is. Quintorris Lopez Jones, better known as Julio.
Zero2Cool (16h) : Matt Ryan completed 80% of his passes against Packers in October.
uffda udfa (17h) : McGinn goes full on attack mode dismissing the notion of "Packers people". Harsh.
uffda udfa (17h) : McGinn says John Dorsey likely to be next Packers GM.
Zero2Cool (19h) : Boom! Davante Adams says last year's ankle injury "more difficult to deal with'
uffda udfa (22h) : Packers brass potentially leaving? Not worthy of discussing. Pressure Cooker? Never enough talk about them.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Put Quintorris in a pressure cooker.
uffda udfa (19-Jan) : Back to football: Julio says he's going to play Sunday. Did NOT say he wouldn't be limited in the game.
uffda udfa (19-Jan) : Anyone ever used their dishwasher to make their Thanksgiving turkey?
