GREEN BAY — The Pro Football Hall of Fame's preliminary list of modern era nominees includes a number of candidates with Green Bay Packers connections, including the two men — general manager Ron Wolf and coach Mike Holmgren — who helped turn the moribund franchise into a Super Bowl champion in the 1990s.

Also on the list are former wide receiver Sterling Sharpe, current outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene, former safety LeRoy Butler and Clay Matthews Jr., the father of current Packers linebacker Clay Matthews III, are all on the list.

This is the first year Holmgren has been nominated. Wolf, Greene and Matthews have been semifinalists before and Greene was a finalist last year but was not elected.

Wolf could not be reached for comment Wednesday evening, but when he was included on the list of nominees for the first time in 2001, he couldn't believe he'd even made that list.

"That's unbelievable, isn't it? That really means a lot to me," Wolf said in an interview then. "I don't have a chance, but just to be nominated, that in itself is shocking to me.''

Only two general managers, Tex Schramm and Jim Finks, have been enshrined in the Hall of Fame. That said, many around the league believe Wolf is worthy of consideration given his lengthy NFL service -- he started with the Oakland Raiders in 1963 and also worked for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets before coming to Green Bay -- and what he did to rebuild the Packers.

"You talk about bringing a franchise back to life ... we were able to do that there. I'm really proud of that," Wolf said in that 2001 interview. "When I took the job, everybody was telling me, 'This is it, you don't have a chance.' No one wanted to go there. It was considered a death knell. However, we were able to turn that around."

Greene is the NFL's all-time leader in sacks by a linebacker — 160, ranking behind only Hall of Fame defensive ends Bruce Smith (200) and Reggie White (198) — has been a semifinalist six times but last year was the first time he was a finalist.

Greene wasn't available to reporters Wednesday — defensive coaches speak on Fridays — but admitted two years ago that coming up short hasn't been easy year after year.

"I'm managing the ups and downs of the process. It'd be great if I took a step forward in the process, but more importantly, I'm knee deep in what I'm doing right now," Greene said then. "I'm definitely focused what I'm doing now and being the best coach for my kids that I can be. It's not dominating my thoughts like when I had nothing to do."

uffda udfa (1h) : Just rewatched Cobbs hail mary catch in slo mo...he should've been flagged for OPI. Got away with one.
uffda udfa (4h) : Nope. I like Gus.
beast (4h) : Did you want Anthony Lynn as HC? Cushion Bradley was going to follow Lynn where ever.
uffda udfa (5h) : Gus Bradley is new DC in SD/LA. I would've loved to had him here in Green Bay.
uffda udfa (9h) : It's just fine.
musccy (9h) : 5 questionable Packers, none for Falcons. Not good.
uffda udfa (9h) : Jordy not listed as OUT or DOUBTFUL. Questionable on injury report.
uffda udfa (11h) : This is the 6th straight game we've faced someone for the 2nd time. We learn.
uffda udfa (11h) : Aaron: I like our role. I like our chances. (said he relishes being an underdog)
uffda udfa (11h) : Aaron alludes to fake crowd noise at Georgia Dome for Sunday.
uffda udfa (11h) : So, to recap. Losing streak "just the way it is", winning streak "astronomical feat". #Balanced
uffda udfa (12h) : Ironically, he called the turn around "astronomical" not just the way it is in the NFL. #Don'tMissTheIrony
uffda udfa (12h) : Ted tells Demovsky the Packers weren't underachieving when 4-6. Just the way it is in the NFL????
Zero2Cool (15h) : Only time I recall getting annoyed is when they beat a single topic over and over and over.
Pack93z (16h) : Most yes... Heller seems to get it more so... diversity in his coverage... but seemingly can highlight the pressing issues properly.
Zero2Cool (16h) : I'm kind of in the boat that they all are babblying boonies.
Pack93z (16h) : God bless it... Bill Michaels can be a stubborn SOB at times... love his Packers coverage, still think he is a buffoon at times.
Zero2Cool (16h) : Jordy Nelson Named PFWA Comeback Player of the Year
Zero2Cool (18h) : Carter is predicitng the end is in ATL for Packers.
Porforis (18h) : Or I could just completely miss the part where that was Cris Carter.
Porforis (18h) : Careful there. Don't you want to predict a Packers loss just in case?
Zero2Cool (18h) : @criscarter80 :Every fairy tale comes to an end, and this is where the magic carpet ride stops in the ATL.
Zero2Cool (19h) : McCarthy: "JC Tretter actually had surgery Tuesday. He won't be available this week"
Zero2Cool (20h) : Crosby is fine now. Full Participant in practice Thursday
Porforis (20h) : What I'm more worried about at this point is WR injuries and Crosby being sick. Who'd be the backup if Crosby can't go?
Zero2Cool (20h) : We do have hope. Our secondary has improved. Also, he had to throw 80% to get 1 point up. That won't happen again.
Zero2Cool (20h) : I like to tease sometimes.
uffda udfa (21h) : Only 80%? :). We lost by one given that stat? Wish we had hope of tightening up.
uffda udfa (21h) : Z, u should tell everyone who Quintorris is. Quintorris Lopez Jones, better known as Julio.
Zero2Cool (21h) : Matt Ryan completed 80% of his passes against Packers in October.
uffda udfa (21h) : McGinn goes full on attack mode dismissing the notion of "Packers people". Harsh.
uffda udfa (21h) : McGinn says John Dorsey likely to be next Packers GM.
Zero2Cool (23h) : Boom! Davante Adams says last year's ankle injury "more difficult to deal with'
uffda udfa (20-Jan) : Packers brass potentially leaving? Not worthy of discussing. Pressure Cooker? Never enough talk about them.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Put Quintorris in a pressure cooker.
