Eric Galko, Optimum Scouting Sporting News  has GB taking OLB Barkevious Mingo in the first round. He is a little small but quick. I love his name.

Barkevious Mingo*, DE/OLB, LSU
Height: 6-4. Weight: 241. Arm: 33.68.
40 Time: 4.58.
Projected Round (2013): Top-20 Pick.

walter report

3/2/13: Mingo had a disappointing season which has proven that he should be a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL. The junior is very undersized and not strong enough to be a 4-3 end. However, Mingo could play 4-3 outside linebacker in a role similar to the Broncos' Von Miller.

8/27/12: Mingo is a fabulous athlete and a pure speed-rusher. The sophomore was constantly making plays in the backfield last season.

combine results:
Barkevious Mingo*, DE/OLB, LSU
Height: 6-4. Weight: 241
40 time 4.58
bench press -
vert leap 37.0
Broad Jump 128
Shuttle 4.39
3Cone 6.84

Nick Perry DE Southern California
height 6-3 weight 271
40 time 4.55
bench press 35
vert leap 38.5
Broad Jump 124
Shuttle 4.66
3Cone 7.25

If Perry is healthy I don't see GB needed to pick up Mingo. He certainly is too light to play DE and I can't see GB moving Perry back to the DL.

Sounds like a guy who'd be able to cover, as well as get to the QB.

If he's undersized, they'd probably want him backing up Clay on that side. The theory is that you want your beefier guy on the L of the defense, because that's the side teams will tend to run toward.

Still, I'd LOVE to get another competent OLB.

After losing Erik Walden, the top backup at OLB, the Packers need a solid OLB 3 to fill that void.

I was thrilled with how Nick Perry was starting to play before he went IR, but I agree the depth behind him is lacking. I would be happy for GB to get this player. Quality behind Perry and Matthews.

I haven't tried a draft prediction or gotten upset over a draft selection since.

To answer your question. I would not use a first round draft pick on someone to fill a backup role, unless I had an aging QB and it was a QB. Everyone knows that QB is the most important players and people on this small planet.

We've been without both quality play opposite Matthews and without Matthews himself. I see that backup OLB is pretty important in Green Bay.

I'm trusting Ted will slot his picks well. This is an important draft for him and his team.

No Kevin I was not specifically talking to you. Just the board in general. I was was saying last night I like Mingo. He is a little small but he is young and will add some beef over the next few years. I just don't see GB having a position for him and using a #1 pick to have him fill in doesn't make a whole lotta of sense. If Perry is more seriously injured then everything changes.
I am not a draft expert no where near one. That said I simply do not understand where some of the so called draft experts come up with their picks. It is as if they have no idea who is already on the team or what the HC is trying to run for an offense and defense.

If Billy Bob McLenty does something like this I have no issues with him. He doesn't go to the combines. He doesn't talk to the coaching staffs for all 31 teams and Jacksonville. When a major publication like TSN puts this out I question it. Still left on his board is Dante Jones. He would make more sense. Travis Frederick and Barrett Jones aren't even taken in the first 2 rounds.

I hate his pick of Logan Ryan in the 2nd round as well. He uses GB's first 2 picks in areas that are not their greatest needs. I even question if these players are even the BPA at the time.

I am not convinced that Eric Galko knows what he is doing. I took a very quick look at about a dozen "Big Boards" and Mingo is in the top 20 on all of them. So I am not saying he is not a quality player at all. Merely if GB does take him what do they do with Perry?

I don't see it happening, but you never know.

I'd like for it to happen, as this is one of those positions that, as a team, you can never have enough of.

The Giants had that figured out and it won them two Super Bowls, the first one pretty much on the strength of their pass rush alone.

That 2007 team was 3 deep at DE with Strahan, Tuck and Umenyiora. Next to that, they had guys on their roster like Kiwanuka and Robbins.

I'd love for us to pick another DE/OLB early on. Players get injured, players just get tired... When your pass rush drops, the entire defense turns to pieces. Even if you have Revis on one side and Sherman on the other.

If you can pull Matthews to keep him fresh and still get some pressure on the passer from the OLB position, it gives you such a big advantage. You can keep a playmaker fresh 'till far in the 4th when those O-linemen have played full-time. You can mix it up and get a speed rusher like Mingo one play and Matthews bullying that T the next, you can get all three on the field on the same time in obvious passing situations, may it be with Perry with his hand on the ground, replacing an ILB, going with the 1-5-5 or whatever.

Lastly, if one of them do bust, you have yourself some insurance. Not that you draft with that reason in mind, but it could very well happen.
