Hawk played so well this year?
What kind of alternate reality is this? He did play well in exactly ONE game, then he was a non-factor the whole season.

He was 9th in tackles among NFL ILBs. That is a favorable comparison.
3rd in sacks among ILBs. Again, favorable.

As far as that "exactly ONE game" goes, I'm assuming you're talking about @BAL, which was far and away his best game statistically. He really took over the game with 10 tackles and 3 sacks. But this wasn't the only game where his play was great. He recorded double-digit tackles in three other games as well. His interception of Ben Roethlisberger was fantastic. Oh, and he is about to set the franchise record for tackles.

I really shouldn't have to defend him, his performance speaks volumes.
But by all means, we all see things differently, and you are entitled to your opinion.
I just strongly disagree, and personally hope to see him back and playing at a high level next year as well.

I will sit squarely on the fence regarding A.J. Hawk. We have more significant needs than replacing him, that's for sure. I think he stood out in a good way, but only in comparison to two things: 1. the way he played in past years and 2. the rotten way most of the rest of the Packer D played. The lesser of the two starting ILBs by far was Brad Jones. I wish Thompson had never re-signed him, and I want to see him replaced. However, Lattimore would seem to be a decent replacement for Jones, so maybe we take a quality ILB in the 3rd or 4th round.

I also think we don't need a replacement for Raji and Pickett - who REALLY need to be GONE from the team. For most downs, I don't want a big fatty playing NT anyway - Daniels would be a lot better. For those few situations where we really need the bulk, Boyd has played head and shoulders better than either Raji or Pickett.

First choice for the first round would be the best COVERAGE Safety available - NOT some big hitter who can't cover.

The other top area of need would be OLB. I would say the jury is still out on Nick Perry. Mulumba has been impressive for a UDFA, but either signing somebody like Orakpo or drafting a quality OLB in the second round would be a good idea.

The third area of need would still probably be O-Line. Bulaga was not great even before his injury; Sherrod is getting more bust-like all the time, although I still have hope for him; I just don't see the fascination so many have for Bakhtiari - he sucked badly in pass blocking, and was only mediocre in run blocking - where did Lacy and Starks get most of their good gains? Not off tackle - up the middle.

All those needs aside, just watch Ol' Ted go and draft a TE in the first round - something we REALLY don't need with Quarless, Bostick, Taylor, and Stoneburner already being on board.

That the Terrell Buckley rule or something? [grin1]

Casey Hayward 5' 11"
Jerron McMillian 5' 11"
Nick Collins 5' 11"
Marviel Underwood 5' 10"

That makes Hayward the only exception on the CB list. I can imagine that you pull the trigger and ignore that one inch when the value gets too good to pass up. He was ridiculous for Vanderbilt.

We actually passed on 6'2 CB Trumaine Johnson for him.

I’m sure Thompson (and Wolf) had exceptions over their tenure as GM, but I’m guessing it was rare. Regardless, it would surprise me if the Packers took Joyner or any cornerback that small.

I say YES!!!!!! I don't think we should count on Burnett getting better, though the possibility may exist with less pressure to cover the whole damn field… We must add at least one S this offseason. I'd prefer it was a proven vet FS, then draft another top S.

If they made that switch, and drafted a stud CB instead, I wouldn't be too disappointed. Regardless, they should add at least 1 more great S talent to our team, and ditch MD Jennings like a hot rock.

Hawk improved this season. He will be worth keeping around for his experience, but I would love to see that work out differently and get a major upgrade at both ILB and MLB. To me, he is a player we could move on from… as is Brad Jones, MD Jennings, Mike Neal, BJ Raji, and sadly Ryan Pickett.

I can see both Hawk and Pickett sticking around another season, and it wouldn't hurt us. Both could provide great depth behind new players at those positions. Pick played injured this last year. I'd love for them to draft a replacement for him, someone with that same kind of size and talent, and those guys fall off the board early.

Now that the season is over, I agree that Hyde will make a great safety prospect for next season. I hope there is still a great ILB available by this pick. I have heard it is slim pickins at this position this year so far for the draft.
