Whenever I hear this debate about a defensive player as MVP, I think of Alan Page.

He won it in 1971. They won the division with an absolutely dominant defense (much more than Watt has with him, IMO). They lost in the divisional playoff.

IMO, the MVP is about season-by-season greatness.

How did his contribution compare to Watt's?

Check out this link:

IMO, Watt arguably had as dominant a year by a defensive player as we've ever seen.

I have zero problem with Watt winning the MVP. He won't. But he should.

Putting aside my obvious bias, I would vote for Watt.
What he has done this year in a league that discourages defense is phenomenal.

For some reason I have a feeling this will be one of those Co-MVP seasons where both Rodgers and Watt share it.

There are arguments for Rodgers, Romo, Brady. There is no mention of another defensive player to even consider.

If Watt doesn't earn the MVP this year, it is officially the QB with good stats on a winning team award.

But frankly, the Texans defense is average to decent at best in many categories, and Watt's efforts were not enough to get the team to the playoffs. I may be wrong, but I just can't shake that thought. How can the most valuable player in the league not be a member of a playoff team, or at least a very good to great unit on whatever side of the ball they play on? Perhaps I'm tripped up on the semantics between "most VALUABLE player" and "best or most talented player" in the league. Aaron Rodgers and even Andrew Luck are clearly more valuable than JJ Watt, imo, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are the better or more talented players.

They should just split the awards to offensive MVP of the year and defensive MVP of the year. There is no way to compare the impact and cheating a player because his team sucks isn't right. I think the Packers would be about 2-14 without Rodgers so he would get my vote.

It could easily be argued that Aaron Rodgers and other quarterbacks like him influence every aspect of the offense AND many aspects of the defense. An argument can be made that Watt impacts both the offense and defense, but in total, I don't think it's as much as Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers and other elite quarterbacks not only are great themselves, but they make their teammates great, too. They basically impact the entire ballgame to a greater extent than just an elite defender, imo. I would be much more intimidated playing Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or Andrew Luck than JJ Watt, at least in terms in the chances of winning the game. Both Rodgers and Watt significantly impact the game, but I think a healthy Aaron Rodgers impacts the game more, and is therefore more "valuable". I think a team would need two JJ Watts plus a few other good defenders to impact the game like an elite quarterback does. JJ Watt is probably more physically talented, but what is more valuable to an NFL franchise?

Corey Linsley should be the MVP.

Because Rodgers ain't doing shit if the ball doesn't get snapped to him.

I think if you take the MVP literally and look at the player most valuable to his team, in the entire league, its very hard to argue that Watt is that guy.

Is Watt the most dominate player at his position in the league? Yeah, probably, good argument for Murray at RB as well, but that isn't what the MVP is. Thats why there is the MVP, OPOY and DPOY awards. Watt is certainly the DPOY.

If the MVP was given to the player who had the best year in relation to other people at his position, regardless of the impact that had on the game, you could give it to a punter or a long snapper or something, again that simply isn't judging criteria for the award.

Very simple question: Is Watt more valuable to the Texans than Rodgers is to the Packers?
