Wait, so you're telling me I'm not smart? I'm not sure whether to be hurt or offended.

Ah, who am I kidding. I could never fool anyone into thinking I'm smart.

But no, I just wanted to disagree with the idea because I don't like it... but in this case it is because I'm biased... and I'm thinking in the team's perspective and MeanMattCassel is thinking about Vogel's perspective.

In short, MeanMattCassel was probably right, I just don't like it šŸ‘…

Vogel asked for his release. Screw him then. If he don't wanna fight for his job, compete for his job, get lost. Remember when we drafted Brett Conway? He was third round or something and an undrafted rookie won the job and became the all time scoring leader for the Packers franchise. Draft position only gets you so far.

Vogel is weak, we don't need that defeated attitude on the roster. The Packers will bring in another punting leg for training camp.

Just because someone said it, doesn't mean it smart... (though really, it probably is smart for the punter, but I'm thinking about the team)

Packers GM said he drafted the punter because he has rare punting talent... if they see him as elite then I can see them pulling the trigger on this... and releasing Vogel just because he asked for it and nothing being wrong.
They pulled off a 7th round pick for LB Lerentee McCray... remember him? Of course we don't... he did less for the Packers than Vogel.... of course, there would have to be a need, but one training camp injury, and the Packers might earn themselves a 7th round pick (maybe conditionally but still).

PS: The 7th the Packers got for LB Lerentee McCray was used to select LS Hunter Bradley this year.

I wonder how often a team drafts a punter and then the incubient wins the job over him, probably not too often.

Denver just traded Riley Dixon to Giants for a conditional 7th [after singing King] and Vogel is quite a bit better. [Beast was right, Vogel surely had trade value].

Dixon (’16 7th rounder) last year netted 40.2 (#22) with same inside 20 rate as Vogel [I typo’d earlier that he was 9th in net, Vogel was 7th (41.6)]. Dixon had 3 TBs (Vogel 2) and 2 punts blocked (Vogel 0). This guy was in his 2d year and not nearly as good as rookie Vogel.

If Vogel were cut, he and his 2 years/$1.1M salary would surely be claimed by the Giants or Cleveland [Their punter is 33 YO, net 40.6, and is due 2 years/$5.7M].

So, any other team with a lousy punter or an over paid one [EG, TB ā€˜s 29YO punter netted 2 yards less and is due 2 years/$6M; Seattle’s 36YO punter netted almost 3 yards less and is due 2 years/$5.6M] would need to TRADE for Vogel to upgrade their punter position and some could save millions in cap over next 2 years.

Hell, a good GM might have several bidders and work it into a 6th.

And if Vogel don’t want to compete, well then that’s just too damn bad for him. A good GM doesn’t cater to this type of kiddy crap. A good GM doesn’t give away team assets. He’s a punter, he’s not going to create discord on the team; his failure to act like a responsible adult will harm his career. A good GM would pull out the contract and say, ā€œSon, I expect you to live up to your word as a man…and if you chose to be less than a man, but instead act like a unkind uncaring soulless Millennial sniveling snowflake its-all-about-me-me-me bitch, then we’ll take the requisite steps to hold you to your contract.ā€

Just to be clear, the odds are against it... but still there is that potential chance just like what happened with LB McCray and OG Schlauderaff... there was zero chance the Packers were going to keep them... and to ensure that no other team got a chance to get them first... other teams traded a conditional 7th for them and they stayed on their new roster and earned the Packers those conditional picks.

Positives:

-Another roster spot for someone who else who may compete at a more needed position
- Less chance for locker room drama, player not wanting to be here
