C.J. Wilson | Defensive End | East Carolina | 6'3" - 290 lbs.

OVERVIEW
The unquestioned leader of the Pirates squad, Wilson is a personable and passionate student-athlete who, as a battle- tested veteran, has firmly secured a reputation as one of the top defensive ends and pass rushers in Conference USA. Possessing excellent quickness, strength, athleticism and attention to fundamentals, Wilson has earned his standing as the unit's sack leader.

Wilson is a music aficionado and an accomplished piano player. He is also an academic success story, as he displayed dedication and exceptional work ethic in the classroom that earned him selection to the 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 East Carolina Athletic Director's Honor Roll as a communications major.

Wilson also comes from a sports-oriented family. Two of his older brothers played Division I football. Everett competed at North Carolina A&T and Amos was a member of the New Mexico State squad. Two other brothers are playing at the junior college level, one in football and the other in basketball.

Cited by position coach Vernon Hargreaves as the unit's recipient of the "distinction of attitude, effort and leadership" award the last three seasons, Wilson ranks with the elite at his position among active defensive linemen, including sacks (27.0), sack lost yardage (164), tackles for loss (45.5), and lost yardage via stops behind the line of scrimmage (213).

At Northside High School, Wilson was a two-time Washington Daily News All-Area choice, playing a key role in the Panthers' 13-3 record and a berth in the Eastern Championship contest during his senior year. The team captain also earned All-Conference honors that season. In addition to football, he earned letters in basketball and track.

Wilson originally signed with East Carolina in February, 2005, but officially joined the Pirate football program after the spring semester (2006) after completing NCAA eligibility requirements. He became an instant success as a true freshman, earning his way into the starting lineup for seven games in 2006. He began a string of four consecutive seasons as the team's sack leader, dropping four quarterbacks among his 29 tackles (17 solos), six stops for loss and four pressures.

As a sophomore, Wilson came off the bench for the first four games before securing the starting job at left defensive end for the final nine contests. He posted 36 tackles along with seven sacks. He also produced 10.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage, along with 12 pressures while blocking two kicks.

The 2008 season garnered Wilson national attention. He was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year and was also selected the league's MVP. He recorded 70 tackles (35 solos) in 14 starting assignments, ranking second in the conference with 10.5 sacks and third with 18.5 stops for loss, guiding a unit that led Conference USA in scoring defense (21.07 ppg) and total defense (333.00 ypg).

Wilson was again named first-team All-Conference USA as a senior. He started all 14 games, posting 57 tackles (23 solos) that included 5.5 sacks, 10.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage and fourteen QB pressures. He also blocked the fourth kick for his career and caused a pair of fumbles.

Not too thrilled with this pick either. Not a single CB drafted the entire draft. TT's taking a big chance IMO. If it comes back to bite us I'm going to be pissed.

I like the fact that he has leadership and dedication to go along with his academics. Looks like a great fit as far as "Packer people" are concerned.

National Football Post: I don't know the role Wilson is going to play in the Packers 3-4 defense. I don't think he's a 3-4 defensive end or an outside linebacker, tough to fit a square block in a round hole.

This is my question too. Apparently he's a quick pass rusher at DE but his size (6'3, 290) makes me think he's a bit big to just move to OLB. I wonder what their plan is with him.

From JSOnline: * 6-3
* 284
* 4.89 in the 40
* Arms: 33 1/8
* Hands: 10
* 32 on the bench
* Four-year starter with big production: 160 tackles, 45.5 TFL, 27 sacks.
* From scouting report his sounds a lot like Cullen Jenkins in that's he's a strong bull rusher.
* Almost prototype five technique for a 3-4 team.
* Was projected to be a fourth-fifth round pick.
* Gives a ton of effort and makes a lot of hustle plays.
* Summary from Pro Football Weekly: "Is not a top-notch athlete and lacks ideal body length, but has enough bulk and functional strength to play the five-technique in a 30 front or be a base left end in a 40 front. Could also shift inside and serve as a nickel rusher, although does not have the wardaddy mentality to consistently play inside.
* Quick to read and react on screens, gets hands up in passing lanes.
* Good instincts.

Interesting he was projected 4th-5th and slipped all the way to us in the 7th.

Don't see where he fits.
I doubt he will make the team.

I doubt he will make the team.

Obviously Ted Thompson disagrees. I don't think anybody would pick a player if they didn't envision them pushing for a spot on the roster.

He's a DE. Practice Squad guy. Needs to develop. Again, it's a luxury pick. You're probably not going to find an edge rusher that can come in and go opposite of Clay Matthews. You're definitely not going to find a corner that's better than Brandon Underwood and Tramon Williams here. Although, A.J. Jefferson could develop into one. This was value.

I agree PS player. I won't complain about who they get in the 7th round. No need to do that.

Not to dismiss his intelligence, but Communications is the easiest major on the planet. Anyone can land Honor roll in that major. Sorry Wilson, but it's true.

However, being an accomplished pianist, that's pretty dang cool. :thumbright:

So you guys are saying PS. OK, I was wondering where he'd fit the team.

If we kept 7 defensive linemen, it could be:

Pickett, Raji, Jenkins, Jolly, Wynn, Neal, Wilson
This is a placeholder
Fan Shout
Martha Careful (21h) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (22h) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
