It's only stupid when it doesn't work.

Yes, would have been nice to put a long drive that would have given our D a much needed rest. I'm not trying to defend Mike McCarthy here. I'm just trying to understand what Mike McCarthy was thinking at the time.

I'm under the impression that Mike McCarthy thought he could catch the Lions with their pants down.

Two points:

1. I have no problem with the play call. In fact, I really have no problems at all with the playcalls on offense this game.

2. I do hope the play wasn't Finesse Mike at work. I hate the idea of winning by "catching them with their pants down." True winners just beat the crap out of people. Finesse is for bridge players, not football coaches.

But overall.. Mike McCarthy I think is a solid NFL Head Coach.. just not a particularly aggressive one when the other team is on the ropes.

Agreed, but this time he did what we wanted him to do - go for the kill shot. It got picked off.

What I am curious about is, who made that play call? Did Mike McCarthy call it or did Rodgers check out of a run to a pass like he did a few times in the game?
I have to look back at Play by Play but didn't Rodgers throw back to back picks. It seemed like it because they were both poorly thrown.

I'm hoping Rodgers gets back to playing like he did the last few years and not like he has so far this year.

The one thing that has consistently bugged me about McCarthy is the killer instinct. I like a lot about the guy, but the killer instinct is a dagger.

I agree. I like Mike McCarthy. But he has a tragic flaw.

I wouldn't want to fight zombies with Mike McCarthy. He's the type of guy who won't shoot the zombie in the head to make sure it's dead when it's on the ground. That will eventually lead to someone being bitten by one that's only looked finished.

Yes, but that could just be the residual effects of the (temporary) Ari Fleischer influence. You do realize that McCarthy's own nadir was back a couple years, and that he has steadily improved since Fleischer left town. The farther away the team gets from the Fleischer moment, the more of the true Killer Mike will become visible. πŸ™‚

It was on Rodgers if I'm not mistaken. He had Finley underneath and that gave him the option of hitting Jennings deep if Jennings was covered one-on-one.

Well, Jennings was covered one-on-one and Rodgers missed him.
Mike McCarthy called the play. It was executed poorly.

And no, Rodgers didn't throw back to back picks. His first pick came in the 3rd Q. It was in fact the opening drive of the 3rd Q. Rodgers threw a pretty good ball to Gregorious but the CB took it from him and Rodgers was charged with the INT.

Then we 3 and out and had to punt.

Then the 2nd pick.

Heh. Good point, Wade. Fleischer's influence put political correctness in Mike McCarthy and one of the side effects of political correctness is pussification.

Hopefully that wears off sooner than later.

Number one was an underthrown backshoulder throw. Rodgers is liking those a bit too much right now.

Number two is throwing a ball up to Greg Jennings who's one on one with Chris Houston. Jennings makes that play 99/100 times. I don't blame anyone, but maybe Jennings a bit, on that play. Jennings did a good job. Houston did a great job.

Something that bugs me about McCarthy and I guess the coaching staff in general is they sometimes seem to have a lot of trouble deciding who they want to play.

For example ROLB, it seemed like they were subbing a new guy in for each series. You get an entire week of practice to make that decision but they use Sunday as an extra day to see what different players have. If you are going to start a young guy at that spot you need to let him get the consistent reps or you are doing him and the team absolutely no good.

I can only imagine what is going to happen with the other S spot now with Burnett down. Sunday is not an extra day of practice damnit!
