Notes: Jennings to wait for new deal

By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel

Green Bay - Focused on this season and not wanting to create a distraction for himself or the team, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings said he would prefer to wait until after the season to address his contract.

Jennings and quarterback Aaron Rodgers are two players the Packers have targeted for contract extensions, even though their deals aren't scheduled to expire until after the 2009 season.

Monday is the deadline for National Football League teams to apply any increase in a player's base salary to the 2008 salary cap, thereby allowing them to use up any available room they have now. The Packers have more than $20 million of salary cap space to burn and could use up a good chunk of it if they sign one of their younger players to a contract extension.

Jennings, who ranks second in the NFL in receiving yards and tied for 16th in receptions, is making a base salary of $445,000 this year. The four-year deal he signed as a second-round pick in 2006 included a $1.24 million signing bonus, and as one of the top producing receivers in the NFL he can strike now if he would like.

Yet it doesn't appear he will.

"I don't want to be a distraction," Jennings said. "I'm not trying to make a big deal out of anything that would take away from the team. I don't want to do any of that. If there is something going on, I don't even want to know about it."

It's possible Jennings' agent, Eugene Parker, has had discussions with the Packers but Jennings said his orders are to wait. He has told Parker that he doesn't even want to talk about a new deal because it would just distract from what he is trying to accomplish this season.

Once the season is over, he'll consider talking.

My thought process is that even if there is something out there, I dont want to do anything until after the season, Jennings said. I dont want to mess with it. Im going to wait. If it were to happen this season, it would happen at the end of the season. It definitely wont happen right now.

The Packers' main focus is on Rodgers, who is in the fourth year of a five-year deal. His base salary is $680,000, but escalators can earn him an additional $3.5 million based on various statistical milestones.

Rodgers has expressed his desire to remain a Packer but he is private about his off-the-field endeavors and hasn't spoken much about his contract.

More than a few players in the locker room said they expected Rodgers to have a new deal soon, but all Rodgers would say when asked if his agent and the Packers are working on a new deal is, Nothing that Im aware of.

Asked if that was him taking the fifth amendment, Rodgers said, Its a nothing that Im aware of. If I was, Id let you know. Eventually.

Sure hope that he gets a nice new contract after this season. He's earned it and more.

That's what I love. There's no selfishness at all on this team. Like in a game last year, where either Jennings or Driver blocked the other one all the way down the field for a TD. Even Deion commented on that.

Jennings and Rodgers are both just amazing. love their mind-set. They're playing the game because they love it, it might just be the greatest job in the world. They're not playing it because it's the best-paying job in the world.

Now hopefully they won't hold out, because that would make this comment look pretty dumb... and if there's one thing I hate, it's when players hold out because they want 7 million a year instead of 5.

EDIT : They do indeed deserve a better contract though, kinda looks like I'm against them earning any money at all, but obviously, I'm not.

I'm all for contracts with escalators, and I admittedly don't know much about NFL contracts... But I wonder how easy it is to get in cap trouble with these types of contracts. Let's say for the year that the team is $5 Million under the cap, but certain players with escalator-type contracts all earn the incentives, which are worth, say $6 Million... What happens?

I would think that the teams have the highest number already figured into the cap..

and then if not met, maybe get that back at end of year and rolled into next cap..

I think its a question for Andrew Brandt!

I'll have to ask him that next time I see him. lol

Do you know off the top of your head where I'd direct that question for his Q&A article?

The bad news here is that we're still $20M under the cap and $4M (?) under the minimum specified by the CBA. When's our deadline to meet the minimum cap? Are we in danger of being in violation?

And, on a deeper, darker note: is this just a ploy by Jennings and his agent to push off negotiations until such time as the Pack is desperate to spend that extra cash? Is he thinking he may get a better deal if he waits?

i dont think that but they have to use the money come monday i believe i think jennings is being honest that he wants to keep his mind on the game and i feel they should give him a good contract so he stays here because he is only going to get better

I love the attitude, but I wouldn't mind seeing him get paid before the deadline is up. Rodgers too.

However, no big deal as long as we carry it over to next year with impossible incentives.

beast (3h) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (3h) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (18h) : Bust it is then

Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.

Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.

dfosterf (28-Apr) : Bowden long snapper Wisconsin. Consensus best LS in college.
dfosterf (28-Apr) : We got Peter Bowde
