BURLINGTON - A 41-year-old Burlington man who allegedly fired shots out of his Joan Street residence following a fight with his wife over the Packers vs. Bears football game on Sunday has been arrested on several felony charges.

Ed Gravely was charged Tuesday with three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment with use of a dangerous weapon, four counts of disorderly conduct while armed, one count of battery and one count of possession of a firearm while intoxicated. If convicted, he faces up to 58 years imprisonment.

According to Burlington police, officers responded to Gravely's house in the 300 block of Joan Street at 10:17 p.m. Sunday after someone inside the residence called 911 and then hung up.

When officers arrived a 14-year-old boy was at the door screaming for help. He said a man was hurting his mother. As he was running out the door, a gunshot went off above the officers' heads, reports said.

Then a 12-year-old boy ran out and another shot went off inside the residence, police said. A short time later, a 9-year-old boy came out carrying a firearm. He told police he had taken the gun from Gravely, but there were more inside.

After firing a third shot, Gravely reportedly came outside and was taken into custody.

He allegedly told police he and his wife had been fighting and drinking alcohol. He reportedly said the fight escalated after she continued to jab at him about the Packers' win over the Bears.

Reports said he is a Bears fan and she is a Packers fan.

Gravely is being held in the Racine County Jail on a $10,000 cash bond.

Why not use the topic of the article as the thread topic? I've always liked done that way to assist preventing another thread with the same article.

There's no way to countenance his behavior, but is it really worth 58 years? That seems like a stretch to me.

The draconian punishments in this country are slowly approaching Elizabethan proportions.

I think 10 years is plenty fine. By then, he would hopefully be old enough to not breed with anyone. That's more important in my book.

The incarceration system does more damage than good. You learn how to be a better criminal more than you learn how to be a better citizen.

I mean really, losing 5, or 10, or 20 years, what's the difference? By the time you get out, you have near nothing regardless except bitterness and anger and in some cases, religion.

Agreed, not to mention the fact that almost no one ever gives you a second chance after you've served your time, so you might as well make all prison sentences for life -- that's effectively what they are. There's a reason why President Obama called the Eagles personally to thank them for giving Michael Vick a second chance: it's a remarkable occurrence (anywhere outside the entertainment industry, anyway).

In a poly sci class I once took, I had to answer the question: "Do you believe in retributive or rehabilitative punishment?" I said: "Neither. I believe in restitutive punishment. It's the only system that benefits the victim in any way."

I believe that more than ever.

I completely agree with you Zero. I've known some good people who went into the system for minor crap, and came out thugs. It doesn't reform people. Just creates thugs.
