Since joining Green Bay in 2007, Mason Crosby has made 78% of his field goals. The league average during that time is just over 82%. Does that make the former Colorado star a below-average placekicker? Hardly. While the 26-year-old certainly isn’t Rob Bironas (Titans), Robbie Gould (Bears) or Adam Vinatieri (Patriots), he’ll make any top 12 list that rightfully factors in weather conditions, average distance of attempt and postseason performance when assessing kickers. The very fact that the Packers want to re-sign Crosby suggests general manager Ted Thompson and head coach Mike McCarthy know all too well that there are lies, damned lies and statistics.

Crosby has kicked in 64 regular season games with Green Bay, and only 13 have been played in domes. That means 80% of his games have been played outdoors. No other kicker has performed as often in the elements during that same time period. And as we all know, playing in the elements in Wisconsin is hardly the same thing as playing in the elements almost anyplace else. So how big of a difference does the climate make? Ryan Longwell, considered by some to be the greatest kicker in franchise history, went from converting 81% of his kicks with the Packers to converting 88% of his kicks with the Vikings. Not coincidentally, Longwell has kicked outdoors only 22 times since switching teams.

Another thing that must be taken into consideration when analyzing kickers is the length of their attempts. Since ’07, Crosby has been called on 21 times from beyond 50 yards. That means a whopping 15% of his field goals have been attempted from long distance. Conversely, Bironas has attempted only 15 such kicks, Gould 9 and Vinatieri 3. This isn’t to suggest that Crosby is as good as those three Pro Bowlers, but the degree of difficulty has to be a taken into consideration when determining just how inferior to them he really is.

Probably the biggest knock on Crosby is his performance in pressure situations. And while it’s true that he hasn’t kicked a game-winner since the opener in Philadelphia in ’07 and that he’s missed a few over the years, he’s also come up big in the two biggest games the Packers have played in the past four seasons. He made two huge field goals in the 2007 NFC Championship against the Giants – including one in the fourth quarter of what will be remembered as one of the worst weather games in league history. And his field goal with two minutes left in Super Bowl XLV increased Green Bay’s lead from 3 to 6 points and changed the way Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers attacked their last possession.

When you also factor in his strong kickoffs (when he’s actually allowed to kick deep), his ability to tackle on returns and his solid personality, it’s easy to see why the Packers like Crosby so much. And while he may never be among the league leaders in field goal percentage, he’ll probably never have one of those meltdown seasons that seem to affect the majority of kickers at least one time in their careers. That may not be good enough for some fans, but it seems to be good enough for Thompson and McCarthy. And for two men who won’t settle for mediocrity, that should tell you all you need to know about Crosby.

Vinieteri's back on the Patriots? I'll be damned.

Crosby is above average. GB's a lousy place for a kicker. The article explains it well.

Right, not a hospitable enviornment for the most part. Worse than a warn climate because the ball gets "heavy and hard", much worse than a dome or the rarified air of Denver. Of course, most writers and people never take that into account, they just look at numbers. I often wonder if trying those long field goals, many times after ultra conservative play calling) hurt Crosby's confidence a little.

Even if he was simply average or slightly below average, we've had terrible special teams in two ways or more for so many years that we're happy to just be average. Look how much of a difference it made last year! Crosby wasn't fantastic but he didn't completely kill us, we finally got a decent punter and suddenly we went from a strong team that couldn't get over the hill to Super Bowl champions. And was it two years ago or 3 years ago that we had that debacle with trying to find a decent holder? I'm pretty sure holder issues cost Crosby some stats too.

Frankly, if you cannot make a kick when it counts, your status dips a lot in my assessment.

The Super Bowl field goal was a chip shot. Let's not exaggerate the difficulty of that kick. The NFC Title kick was clutch though. But for the most part, Crosby has been awful when the moment calls for him to be great. Unless the kick is inside of 30 yards, I do not have confidence in him when the game is on the line.

Yes.....but a "chip shot" in the Super Bowl must carry alot more pressure then in a regular game.
Look at how bad the kick was from the Steelers kicker. Yes, it was a longer kick, but not so crazy long that it should be missed by that much. (I'm glad it was, though!)
Also, it was in a dome, so wind didn't even play into it.

beast (36m) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (16h) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (17h) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (17h) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.

Zero2Cool (18h) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (20h) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.

buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though

Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : Thanks Mucky and whomever created topcos for each pick!
