http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Breaking-down-Matt-Flynn-vs-the-Patriots.html?team=115

Let’s go back to the video today and take a look at Green Bay’s Matt Flynn vs. New England from the 2010 season. With starting QB Aaron Rodgers on the sidelines, we got a chance to see Flynn play on the primetime stage vs. a good football team—and produce.

Today, I want to focus on his 66-yard TD pass to WR James Jones. The route, the defensive scheme and what we are seeing on the video replay that we can learn from. Check out the replay and then let’s get into some coaching points.

Coaching points:

Personnel and alignment: Posse (3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB) on the field for the Packers—a personnel grouping we see often from Mike McCarthy’s offense. But the key here is the alignment. I call this “Doubles Slot Open." A 3x1 set with the TE flexed out to take the spot we would normally see the X receiver (split end) align. This gives Green Bay a three-receiver look to the open side of the formation and multiple route combinations to choose from.

Coverage scheme: Again, we see 2-man (2 deep safeties, trail-man technique underneath) vs. the Packers. Although this is a common coverage in the NFL, I see it played much more vs. Green Bay. Yes, you can take away the vertical schemes up the field, but in the plays I have broken down here at the NFP, the Packers consistently rip this coverage apart. And, as we will see, it often puts stress of the safeties to play with sound technique.

Route concept: First, look at the game situation: 3rd and 7. Now go back to the route scheme. From my perspective, Flynn wants to read the inside combination of Jordy Nelson and Donald Driver running the “whip options” (stem inside, break out from the defender's leverage). With the Pats playing 2-man here, the DBs are going to sit hard with inside leverage and this route combination is a solid call on third down. With Jones? A classic double-move ("sluggo''), and a way to clear out the sideline for both Nelson and Driver to work.

Defensive angle to the ball: I talk about this often with safety play, and this is an example of a poor angle to the football. In 2-man, you are taught as a safety to play with enough depth (on top of the numbers) to take a downhill angle to the ball. That’s not what we see here from New England’s Brandon Meriweather. Instead, this is a lateral—or parallel—angle to the point of attack. And that isn’t going to get it done. Not only does Meriweather fail to make the play, he also knocks off the CB.

Ball placement: This is a solid throw from Flynn. He takes a shot down the field in this situation and by putting the ball on the up field shoulder he takes the CB out of the play. As we said above, 2-man requires the underneath defenders to play in a “trail-man” position. And vs. any vertical route, the CB is already sitting low on the receiver. Add that to the bad angle from the safety and we see an explosive play from the Packers.

I didn't think this was really a spectacular play. Well placed throw by Flynn, no drop from Jones... The protection was good (though it was only a 3 man rush). The real key was clearly the poor position and angle by Brandon Meriweather which led to the collision with Devin McCourty. Thanks for the free score Meriweather!

For almost 20 years now.. this can be seen as just another play.. when many a franchise see these types of plays with far less frequency.

We here in Green Bay have become very spoiled by more times than not, very productive offenses.. and it feel oh so good.

I felt the title of the article, "Breaking down Matt Flynn vs. the Patiots", to be very misleading... the article broke down a play... it didn't break down Matt Flynn...

I was excited when I thought I was gonna read a break down of Flynn in that game...

Anyways after that game I thought Flynn has improved but still has a long way to go, if he's gonna be a starter in the future.

One thing the Mike McCarthy has proven, IMO, his that he can develop QB's. Look at the strides Harrell took last season.

Zero2Cool (13-May) : Sources spoke of many, many times last summer where Hackett called a play, then Rodgers changed it completely at the line
Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.

Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.

Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.

dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.

Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
