It's also worthy to note that yards, in and of themselves, are not a typically strong indicator of good QB play or team play. Teams that are winning in the 4th quarter throw less and run more, so looking at YPA would be a more worthwhile endeavor.

Which are both points we have raised in the Statistical Playground thread, Matt. Thanks for reiterating this.

As we can see, on average, the quarterbacks who are currently in the playoffs averaged outside the top 10 in both passing yards and passing TDs.

That's true, but 'struggling' and being in contention for playoffs are a different thing.

For example, this year the teams that struggled (IE lost a bunch of games in a row, well below .500) were:

Lions, Rams, Chiefs, Seahawks, Raiders, Niners, Bengals, Browns, and Jaguars.

Of those teams, the Lions, Rams, Seahawks, Raiders, Bengals, and Browns, all had sub-par QB play. In some cases (Browns and Seahawks) the starting QBs couldn't stay healthy, and the back-ups struggled. Regardless, they had sub-par QB play.

The Chiefs had what could be termed acceptable QB play with Thigpen throwing for 2,600 yards, 18 TDs and 12 INTs.

All these teams are ahead of the Packers in the draft (hence had worse records than the Pack). They don't have any where near a top tier QB stats-wise like the Packers do in Rodgers.

I won't deny you have a valid point.

Damn it, if I read that I wouldn't have had to type that long post.

It's an interesting stat to note see the numbers of the QBs of playoff bound teams. vikings are the biggest examples, Ferrote and Jackson... I'd rate that one of the lesser QB talents in the league, yet their team is in the playoffs.

I'm just overall surprised that going into the season I really thought having good strong QB play would guarantee us a playoff spot. The QB position was the biggest question.

Well we got good strong QB play, yet here we stand at 6-10. I guess I'm trying to say never in my wildest dreams did I think Rodgers would have the type of season he did, and we'd not just miss the playoffs but be the 9th worse team in the league.

The irony is that had Aaron Rodgers been merely the game manager his critics derisively labeled him, we might have a better record.

But that's pure speculation, and probably not good speculation at that.

At the risk of looking schizophrenic, I'm going to come out and state that I don't actually believe that's true. In fact, I would argue the opposite is true. There were several games in which Mike McCarthy's attempts to turn Rodgers into a game manager helped to lose the game. I still contend that running to set up field goals when we have a sure-handed QB like Rodgers made absolutely no sense. It quite literally was the final nail in the coffin of a number of games this season.

They say Romo's a great QB too.

(Said the same thing about Jeff George too.)

Let me ask you a question. Do you want your QB to be another run-of-the-mill mediocre QB? Do you relish in trying to predict the Packers' downfall for the next, what, 10 years? Do you have any inclination in hoping the starting QB of the Green Bay Packers does well? What has Rodgers done to deserve your ire? Are you a Green Bay fan or not?
