As usual I tend to tune out the talking heads during a game so I don't always hear what they say.

Yesterday I thought I heard someone say AJ is closing in on the GB record for tackles. I was a little bit surprised so I focused on what they were saying but they had moved on.

I checked the Packer record book. John Anderson has 1020 career total tackles. AJ 831. In his best year (2006 and 2012) AJ had 120. He has been averaging about 104 a year. (It will change slightly after Sunday's game.) That means it will take him 2 years more to break it. Barring injury and assuming he plays as much as he has in the past.

I looked at the unassisted tackle record. Once again John Anderson has the career record for 783 while AJ has 573. He is averaging 72 unassisted tackles a year. Again 2006 and 2012 were his best two seasons. It would take him 3 years to break that record.

It makes me wonder if I heard them wrong or if they were talking out the butts. Even if AJ remains on the team 2-3 more years there is no guarantee he would continue to average that many tackles every year. He has has 3 seasons where he had only 80 something total tackles and his unassisted tackles have been as low as 53.

While looking up his tackles I saw something interesting. The Packer website records and history pdf says AJ had 155 tackles in 2006. That placed him 9th on the list. He is 2nd on the list for rookies. Yet the Packers page for AJ and ESPN show that he only has 120 total tackles in 2006. What's up with that?

He will become The Packers all time leader in tackles if he gets 5 against The Bears.

The stat includes solo and assisted tackles for both players.

What I don't know is if Hawks' tackles in post season games are included in those numbers.

Anderson played 12 seasons for The Packers with, if I remember right, only 2 post games played.

Say what you want about Hawk, but he is the only damn LB on our team that shows up every week. People on this forum pick their favorites and pick their whipping boys, Hawk is an example of both. I doubt anyone here is willing to change their mind on him because of all the arguments, but he is the one guy that won't get injured every other game.

The Packers linebacking corp consists of an ineffective, injury prone MLB (Jones), an ineffective, injury prone OLB (Perry), an injury prone, overpaid OLB (Matthews), and a solid, but not great MLB (Hawk). Hawk is one of the few players on defense who is earning his paycheck.

Whether Hawk is or is not close to the record is a matter of fact, not opinion, and it appears Buckeye's stats are solid.

The only thing to be negative about with A.J. Hawk is where he was drafted in comparison to the quality of his play. He has been a decent player for a long time - just not what we expected when he was drafted so high.

It doesn't matter to me if Hawk breaks the all time tackling record or not. I can live with it either way. How are buckeye's "stats solid" when he doesn't even provide any? He just says some numbers but doesn't know where they came from. He doesn't know if the numbers include the post season games or not.

While I go the the Packers site and give you their numbers for Hawk. And verified them at ESPN, CBS and today FOX. By the way FOX shows that Hawk has 39 post season tackles. link  That brings his total to 870 which is still a long way from 1020. I looked fro John's year by year break down at all the reliable sources like NFL reference.com and there are none. The only place I see any tackle info for him is the Packer record book. 870 still doesn't put him in the top 5. And the tackles have only been kept since 1975. So anyone who played prior to that does not count. A dubious record at best.

In the past professional teams keep regular season and post season records separate. Unlike college they don't commingle them as they know some teams and players are in the post season more often than others.

All I am asking is for clarification and proof. I get a reply he thinks it is true but has no source or links to verify. It seems that buckeye's "stats" are not solid at this time.

The problem with tackles is that is was never an officially recorded stat until in the 2000's. Packers have Barnett listed at 1014 as #2, while NFL.com has Barnett listed at 1041 currently including his years away from GB. His GB numbers would be 787. So I am not sure where or how the Packers numbers line up.

What it comes down to, is expectation. AJ was picked #5, and to some that means he should be a highlight reel. Yet I remember when he was drafted he was being called the Safest Pick. Where there were other picks that had more potential upside, they also had a lower downside. Which is what AJ has turned out to be. The knocks on him were that he would overrun plays, and also a little bit of a concern on his size. He cured his overrun to the point where Dom says he doesn't worry about AJ because he is always where he is suppose to be. The biggest mistake AJ made was he bulked up to much which slowed and stiffened him. Now that he has dropped some weight he is moving better again.

I think the reason it appears like he is getting run over more is because he tackles more rather than delivers blows. He absorbs the impact and makes the tackle rather than trying to deliver blows.

He has never missed a game because of injury, he has been physically available for every game. I'd take that everyday from my 1st round pick.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!
