For trade value, here is a non-realistic but simple way to look at it:
1. He "cost" a 1rst round pick
2. Not all 1rst round picks pan out to be starters
3. Not all 1rst round picks pan out to be "need to know where he is" type playmakers

So again, non-realistic but based on value a 1rst round pick based on #1, and a 3rd or 4th rounder based on a combination of #2 and #3. I'm guessing that this is way more than any team would be willing to trade based on his injury history, production this year, and salary.

I don't think it would be smart for the Packers to trade him even if someone did offer the above. Why intentionally weaken or change part of the defense that seems to be working well as a unit? Injury will do that for you enough as it is. Also keep in mind that his role is different this year, which is bound to affect his statline.

I am confused as to the outside contain responsibilities and what they actually are. It does seem like teams are focusing on read option plays keying off of how Clay is reacting to the play.

First, who would you replace him with?
Draft picks are nice, but if you don't hit on them, they are worthless.
So trade a very good player for a couple of "maybes"?
The Packers are short on impact players on defense as it is. Do you jettison one of the few quality players you have?
I wouldn't.

If Clay is worth that much, think how much we could get for ARod!

I'm in the camp that would likely be against trading him because I don't think we could get the right value for him. The reasons we list to consider trading Matthews--injury, low production this year and salary--are the reasons teams won't give us the value we would need to make it worth while. As someone else said, it would be selling low.

As for the cheating in on the run option plays, I think this is a bad habit he's developed due to a lack of trust that someone is going to take care of the run up the middle. There were some examples yesterday where the middle of the field had been cleared out (seemed to all happen once Jones had replaced Lattimore). That puts Clay in the untenable situation of having to defend the edge and the middle of the defense all at once. However, there's plenty of times in which he's cheating in for no reason, when the interior defense has done its job and filled its gaps; and the Dolphins just bounced it outside. It's annoying and Matthews needs to stop doing it so often.

We also need Lattimore back. Jones is worthless. Now I see it's a neck injury for Lattimore? 🤦

If someone were to offer a "Lawrence Welk" trade for Matthews, I would think that Ted Thompson would have to seriously consider it.

That not happening, however, my answer would be an unequivocal no.

I get that we always have the injury-prone discussion each year but I never thought we would get to the point of talking about trading one of the better players on the Packers AND in the NFL... all because he is having a bad start to the season.

Let's think about how much worse the defense would be without Matthews for a moment. Packers linebacker group is not one we could really mess with...

As frustrated as I get in watching this guy struggle with edge concept defense... as much as I think he has failed to develop as a tactician as a pass rusher... As much as I think his persona is larger than his overall game... he does one think that we seem to lack at times.

He brings it every freaking week.. the guy balls out each week.

I personally think his mentality would fit better inside where his aggressive mindset would lead to less risk to the defense.

Trade him.. no. Not at the moment. If we develop a larger core of consistent ballers, that would be when I look to move him for a return and to lighten the cap he carries. One guy, that in my opinion, is emerging to a "heartbeat" type player for this defense.. HaHa. Man that guy has freaky type range and isn't afraid to stick his nose in and bloody it. Kid just seems to have in in terms of being a special football player in space.

I truly hope Carolina and Cam don't run the read option to death this weekend.. if so.. we better park a safety directly shaded that direction if he is going to playing the ball only.
