Since we have threads galore on this topic.. add another than may be flushed in the near future.. Interesting... his defense struggled in Miami in 07'.

*Edit * Looked up the Stats.. 30th in Points.. 23rd in Yards.. I wonder how much that pathetic offense had to do with the performance of the defense?

The whole Miami thing in 07 was a mess though post Saban.. so is that really a fair look?

CAPERS HITS PACKERS RADAR
Posted by Mike Florio on January 16, 2009, 12:46 p.m.
With Mike Nolan and Gregg Williams taking defensive coordinator positions with other teams after being identified as finalists for the same job in Green Bay, another name is being added to the Packers list.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Pats special assistant/secondary Dom Capers is interviewing for the defensive coordinator job on Mike McCarthys staff.

Capers, 58, has spent the last 23 years in the NFL, working as among other things the first head coach of both the Panthers and the Texans, and the defensive coordinator of the Steelers, Jaguars, and Dolphins.

Another former Steelers defensive coordinator, and two-time former head coach, remains in the running as well Jim Haslett.

Then theres Eagles secondary coach Sean McDermott. He still might get the job, if Philly loses on Sunday at Arizona.

As long as we keep it one thread per potential candidate, its cool by my little testies. :)

I like Dom Capers, I believe he was a Steelers DC awhile back and I really really liked him there. I believe he was a 3 - 4 guy too? Right? No?

I would like it if he was hired. Yes, he schemes more in the 3-4, but he's been in the league long enough that he could be fine running the 4-3. Packerupdate had something on him before he was brought in for an interview:

http://www.packerupdate.com/pu/2009/01/packers-should-consider-capers.html

With Mike Nolan and Gregg Williams officially out of the picture, Jim Haslett appears to be the leading candidate to replace Bob Sanders as Green Bays new defensive coordinator. But if Mike McCarthy is truly looking for the best man for the job - and not just the best man that hes worked with in the past - then he should turn his attention to Dom Capers. Currently a special assistant/secondary coach with the Patriots, the 58-year-old is one of the finest defensive minds in all of football. People tend to forget about Capers, but the guy can flat out scheme, said a former scout. Give him some talent and he'll be successful."

Besides having no prior relationship with McCarthy.....

Wils.. beat me to it.. I seen that Packerupdate article this morning.. that is a decent site.

BTW... talked with One of our technology vendors out of Green Bay this morning.. they work with the Packers within the offices.. so whatever it is worth.. what they are hearing.. that Mike McCarthy wants to keep the press coverage scheme as base.. some of the conflict with one of the candidates was they wanted the freedom to be able to run whichever coverage scheme they felt was best in their opinion.. he wouldn't elaborate or couldn't on which candidate it was...

Always love the rumors people hear.. factual or not. ;)

It is entertaining though..

The only other nugget he dropped that I haven't heard.. Tim Lewis has been contacted by the Packers.. interesting to see if that gathers wheels and becomes public or a reality.

id be much happier with Capers than Haslett. Capers is an absolutely quality coach and person.

you have to like anyone who takes on two franchise teams. he isn't a guy that picks winning teams and feeds off them. he enjoys going in and scheming and coaching. IMO he doesn't have the head coach ego either.

Im still holding out for McDermott but Capers is a nice backup plan

I really like to here that Capers is in the running. I posted yesterday that I'd like them to take a look at Capers. Don't forget how underrated he was as head coach of the Panthers when they were an expansion team. He's a former head coach, but I think his legacy will be carved as a defensive mind. I have to say I prefer Capers to Haslett.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

Love hearing this, love it to the max.

There was an article on JSOnline that said Mike McCarthy had as many as 3 more coaches he wanted to interview. Really interesting.

Looking at some of the more successful DC, like LeBeau, Kiffin, Joe Johnson... these guys have been around quite a while. They've got a ton of experience.

I think Capers is similar. I'm all for this move; I'm totally hoping on the 'Dom Capers' bandwagon.

Capers stats

He entered the NFL in 1986, and served a six-year tenure as the New Orleans Saints' defensive backs coach (1986-91), a period during which the team made three playoff appearances.

In 1992, he became the Steelers' defensive coordinator and served there for three seasons, with Pittsburgh qualifying for the playoffs each year.

In 1994 Capers was named the Pro Football Weekly/PFWA Assistant Coach of the Year as the Steelers led the NFL in rush defense.

He also earned Pro Football Weekly/PFWA Assistant Coach of the Year honors as the Jaguars' defensive coordinator in 1999, as Jacksonville led the NFL in scoring defense (13.9 points per game).

Capers most recently completed a two-year stint during which he had defensive coordinator responsibilities with the Miami Dolphins, holding the titles of special assistant to the head coach (2006) and defensive coordinator (2007).

Last season, the Dolphins' pass defense was the highest ranked unit on the team, finishing the season ranked fourth in the NFL.

In 2006, Dolphins defensive lineman Jason Taylor won NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors under Capers' tutelage as the team finished fourth in the league in overall defense.

beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
