Good hire, I was really surprised when I saw this, too. I just knew for sure he would sign with the Giants.

I would be SO happy if we got Terrell Suggs now, he'd be a great addition to this defense. Hopefully we can run a 3-4, 4-3 hybrid if we get the correct personnel.

We won't get Suggs or Scott in my opinion, with the Jets signing Rex Ryan as HC i see the one lb thats left out for FA will be heading to the Jets.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Even if Favre doesn't come back.. the Jets will be tight to the cap for next year. Currently I think they are projected at 11 Million over the 2009 cap.

So where are these Jets going to clear enough cap room to fit one of these high dollar free agents into the cap budget?

You are jumping too fast to conclusions.. there is more to it than just hiring a coach and signing the players..

Are the Ravens the only team with quality people becoming free? Pretty sure there will be a number of other players that will fit into the plans..

Why rain on this good news with projected bad news right away?

It is a process, first Dom needs to come in, study film and start interviewing his personnel.. finding out what strengths he has and then start to put together an overall plan..

At that point, he will need to communicate where the holes are in his vision.. it will then be up to Ted and personnel to target players that will fit into the holes and starting working up their board and ranking.. budget and value projections and then line up a plan..

Little early to say the sky is falling when we don't even know if Suggs, Scott or whomever will fit into the "plan"..

That is why I was getting a little nervous about this stretching out to long.. we need to get moving on this front so it gives them enough time in the compacted next 8 weeks to get the work done..

This is great news for us.. we can get to work now and start a very productive offseason.. we need it.

Going back to the 3-4 4-3 hybrid, I made a topic about it a while back, saying that it might be a good idea. If I remember correctly, nobody thought it would work. Now, it seems like a lot of people want it....haha.

Sorry if off topic, but i'm just sayin'...

Well find where I said it.. I am opposed to a DC coming in and being set hard in a particular alignment without utilizing the talent at hand.

If our talent dictates a 4 man front.. then you adjust your scheme to fit the talent at hand..

Does that mean every freaking play you have to run a 4 man front.. no.. it means you have your base "bread and butter" alignment and add the fluff to it to keep the offenses off balance.

If Dom comes in and thinks we are best suited for a base 3 man front.. so be it.. but I expect to see some 4 man fronts (4 men with their hand in the dirt) type looks as well.

Make the offense think before the snap.. that means change it up just enough where they don't know where the defense is going to be each and every play.

Is it wrong to admit I had a dream about Dom Capers arriving in GB, last night?

Is it also wrong to admit I liked it, and I woke up and had tears in my eyes? (okay, maybe the tears were because I poked myself.... but still) :whipitgood:

In all seriousness though, I'm stoked that Mike McCarthy hired Capers. It's interesting to note that Mike McCarthy went out and hired someone who he (and TT) do not have any history with. That hasn't really been the forte of the Packers the past few years, they prefer to bring in people that have ties to Mike McCarthy / Ted Thompson at some point or another.

I think that speaks to how important Mike McCarthy (TT too?) considered this hire; they wanted best candidate available period, and didn't want to limit themselves by bringing in the issue of familiarity.

Well. I'm going to keep a lid on my imagination until everything's all signed and nice-nice, but I do like this hire.

In particular, I imagine that part of the discussion almost had to involve Mike leaving the defense to Capers and staying out of his way in that sense - and IMO that's a crucial piece to this process, especially if you're dealing with a guy who's as experienced as Capers is. Also, one would assume that Dom likes the personnel he'll have to work with - I'm sure there are adds he'd like, but I doubt he'd agree to do this if he didn't think the group looked good to begin with.

I'll also second whoever mentioned Jimmy Leonhard - as much as I like our safeties, if he's available at a reasonable price he'd be a terrific add. I don't have any real problem with the others mentioned; Peppers, Suggs, Scott, Taylor, I don't see a real negative to any of those.

I agree with those who don't think we'll suddenly lurch over to a 3-4 - I'm sure it'll be more subtle, but I don't claim to know who fits what scheme as well as some of y'all. I'm sure what goes on in FA and the draft will help shape things some, as well.

Overall, I think it's a positive development for sure. If nothing else, it's good to see we got our man this time.

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
