Good thought.. little more agile than Kampy but good point and seemed a little more lengthy than Kampman.. Paup used leverage very well.

I will say it again.. if you think we are going to play straight traditional 3-4 you are going to be disappointed.. I see a season of varied fronts ahead of us and honestly I am "jacked" about it.

Is it necessary to have huge DEs in a 3-4? I could be wrong but arent the Steelers DE's around the same size as AK-74?

EDIT: Just looked it up, Brett Keisel is 285 and Aaron Smith is 298, while Aaron Kampman is 270. I can still see him staying in a 3 point stance. He always play tough against the run and has the determination to do this. If there were size requirements in the NFL, a lot of great players would be out of jobs.

Nope, you can manage differently.. but if you are going to play light in the pants up front.. you better have a couple of stout ILBers.. they are going to have to play with their hands, fight off blocks and play downhill making plays. In other words, the blockers are going to get deeper into the defense..

That is something outside of Bishop that we don't have currently on the roster.

Both Hawk and Barnett have shown to date the inability to fight off blocks and attack.

I think Kampy can play at DE, but if he is going to fight run block doubles all day, you better have a decent rotation of players behind him. Because he won't be effective all game long.. DLine in a true 3-4 is a bitch.

Better bring a set of marbles to the field.. you are going to need them.

There was a quote from Cory Williams early this season.. something to the effect of end in a 3-4 is more physical than a DT in the Packers scheme.

Kampy is very strong through the midsection and upper body.. again I think we will be able to play the spot but within a rotation to give him rest playing lighter.

I am excited to see what they do with the 3-4. Seeing Jenkins and Kampman move around the line more, lining up at different positions. Hopefully getting Hawk into more of an attack mode.

This change will make this one of the more exciting off seasons in a while.

I haven't been this excited in the offseason in awhile. This is great news. I was away from the news and just heard it when I logged into ph this morning.

I was hoping we'd go a hybrid 3-4/4-3. I think MM's comments are right on. He's been here 3 years, and only in year 2 has his D been good. We need change, and this may be what the doctor ordered.

Kampy will be fine. He's one of those players who can adjust to whatever you throw at him. Barnett might have to put on 10-15 pounds. We'll see.

Anyways, great news. I'm excited for '09.

Wouldn't it be kind of hard to put on 10-15 pounds? I mean just putting that on of pure muscle, that seems a bit tough. It'd be easy to just eat hot dogs every night, though. 🙂

No, not at all. Gaining or shedding 20 pounds is very easy, especially when you have professionals helping you do it.
