A lot has been talked about the need for speed at our WR position. First, it is paramount that the WR is a good football player; but second, this debate would be nonexistent if there was no internet and people had to watch the game to decide if one guy was a half second faster than another in a 40.

In 2014 draft: 2 of the “slowest” WRs, Benjamin and Landry are 2 of the best w/ mediocre QBs. Of the 4 "fastest" [Archer, Richardson, Moncrief and Cooks], one is already a bust and the jury is out on the other 3.

In 2013 draft: the “slowest” of top 40 Keenen Allen is pretty darn good; of the 4 "fastest" Goodwin Patterson, Hunter looking like busts, and Austin has been nothing special.

In 2012 draft: the “slowest” top 20 Sanu, not bad, the 4 "fastest" Jenkins, Givens, Hill, Childs all busts.

Al Davis was all about speed...Al Davis was a dumbass. The key to drafting is to draft good football players. As I've said 1000 times before, separation is usually not created by speed; but by instincts and precision route running.

The other thing is that none of these guys are "slow;" they are all fast. Only the Al Davis-types with a stop-watch gawking incestuous fetish think these guys are slow.

The biggest factor that will create separation is play calling without predictable routes.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

I agree to some extent. 40 times certainly wow us at the combine, but how often does a wideout get to run straight deep with no contact? Wideouts with route running abillity and quickness seem to be able to play sooner.

That being said I'd love for us to grab a BIG fast physical wideout and/or Tightend. But there aren't really any guys like that in this draft.

I really like Tyler Boyd from Pitt AKA Larry Fitzgerald lite, he's not a "burner" persay but he glides across the field and plays faster than his 40 will suggest. I do like Michael Thomas from Ohio State for his size, potential, and pedigree, but I worry about him getting separation on a consistent basis due to lack of burst.

John Elway just gave an interview and elaborated on how he built this Broncos team. He built them upon...SPEED. Now, he said he didn't use 40 times but rather football playing speed. So, to say speed schmeed is ostrich like thinking. Speed is HUGE...just HUGE. To minimize it's value is to not understand the most basic of concepts. It's a fundamental thing that changes games, careers, contract size, draft position, etc. It's value is found everywhere in football.

Go rewatch Colin Kaepernick torch our D on the ground in playoffs past and tell me his speed had nothing to do with anything. He could've been Peyton Manning and same thing would've happened? No.

Sam Shields would not be a Packer save for his blazing speed. It is his saving grace. Ask Sam if speed matters as he looks up out of the back of his Brinks truck. Speed made Sam a multimillionaire. If LaDarius Gunter had the same, he'd be Sam Shields, too, but he doesn't so he isn't.

Watch Eddie Lacy get tackled on his long run at Arizona... speed doesn't matter. Nope. Just get heavier Eddie...Barfarn says your speed is irrelevant. His inability to score due to lack of speed changed the game.

EVERYBODY AND THEIR SISTER have tried to tell you 40 times don't matter, that it's football speed that counts.

Now that John Elway says the same thing you are ready to admit you were wrong for the last 2 years.

Congratulations.

I read Barfarns post and that is exactly what he is talking about.

Football players, game speed.

Everybody said Jerry Rice wasn't fast enough.

Same thing with Greg Jennings, James Jones and Jordy Nelson. Driver was a track guy. Took him three years to become a football player.

Speed matters...A LOT. We've been too slow on offense. I've said that at least as many times to fall upon deaf ears upon the likes of you who thinks we're "fine". You are a Packers brass sycophant. If they say we're fine...then we're fine to you. Nope. Don't care what they say...we haven't been fine and we all saw that this season. Other teams executives and scouts commented how abysmal we were as far as team speed but if management doesn't admit it neither will you. It would be easier for me if I didn't have to think, either, and just buy everything our management says. That would be bliss. When I actually think about what I see that's not a very fun thing to deal with. I understand why you choose the easier road.

I do not know, but I think Al did a great deal of things right for a football man who made his money in football, and football only. With the exception of the share holders in Green Bay, no other owners in the game can claim they have and always been a football only success both financially and from a championship standpoint.

The rest are all billionaire business guru's who have no idea why a W.R. might need separation to be successful.
