In Atlanta's first 4 drives, 2Tds, 1 FG and 1 punt. The DEFENSE DID ITS JOB relative to the way the team is built.

That's a style we've seen promulgated in Green Bay for years now, and it just seems to lead to fourth-quarter and overtime collapses. I want a defense that can force multiple threes-and-out per game. The average NFL team scored 22.6 points in 2016. Green Bay surrendered 25.1 points per game. That might not sound like a lot, but it makes a big difference, especially in close games -- as most NFL games are. Force another punt or two per game, and suddenly the offense doesn't have to be scoring 30-plus points to give the team a fighting chance.

I agree with you on our defensive style. It should just be called "give the other team free yards and hope they eventually mess up enough for us to get a stop". In the game against Atlanta we had our most success on defense when they tried to hit bigger plays but we still kept on playing soft and giving them 10-15 yard cushions. One of the most efficient offenses in NFL history and our plan was to hope they messed up enough having to make long drives...

This is why I have a hard time firing Dom and fear a new guy might do worse. They should keep Dom and find a Luke Getsy-like D minded youngster and make him asst DC.

And Dom is working with a D that is starkly underpaid versus the league. A yearly cap figure is not a reliable measure of contract value because it can be artificially high or low at any given point of the deal. The best measure of contract value is the average salary. In 2016, when looking at the average salary of the entire contract for each player GB allocated 44.94% of this figure to defense; that puts them at #21, not #6! And without Shields’ salary, GB’s average salary for the Defense was #28.

Now, compare average salaries of our base D and nickel to Seattle’s; the difference especially in the middle players is really huge.

Mathews 13.2 Sherman 14

Daniels 10.25 Wagner 10,750

Peppers 8.67 Bennett 10,500

Burnett 6.2 Avril 7.125

Guion 3.6 Chancellor 7

Clark 2.3 KJ Wright 6,750

Dix 2.08 Lane 5.750

Randall 2 Rubin 4

Ryan .685 Reed 1.2

Hyde .585 Morgan 1

Gunter .527 Shed .760

Thomas .48 Terrell .6

Both teams were missing one high priced stud [Thomas/Shields]. And of GB’s top 4, Mathews had an AC joint; Burnett a quad and Peppers took 3-400 more snaps over the year than he was supposed to. Especially with Shields out and some of the higher priced D guys banged up this team was built to win through offense

If the D holds Atl to 36 [I think they do if the O does its job] and Rodgers and the Offense played like they did the 8 games before; we would have won this game. This loss is on the Offense.

Plenty of excuses for the D this year.

What about last year?

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."
