The Packers added a second rookie snapper, signing Derek Hart of James Madison.

It's difficult to get excited about a long snapper battle. If I had my way I would have a center who can also log snap and thus open a roster spot for someone else.
If a TE can learn to be a LS I can't see why a center or a backup guard can't do the same.

Could be a Kuhn/Rip situation. That's not a position you screw around with, but it's good to get young blood in now and get him trained up so he's ready to go if Goode gets hurt or starts declining.

Another thing I don't understand, is, how can they sign a college kid when the draft hasn't been held yet?

Could he back up Linsley at C?

Over the years I read about a lot of LS who use to play another position. They could see they wouldn't make the team or they were 3rd- 4th string and decided to add LS to their ability. Why can't the starting center or 2nd string G do the same?

Long snapper is important. Punts, field goals and extra points can win or lose a game for you.
I think Davis was the name of the last long snapper I believe. And I remember how he always was downfield and making tackles on punt returns.
It's kind of like punters or FG kickers. You don't realize how important they are until you have a lousy one.

Is the Long Snapper more important than the 7th WR? Yes. More important than the 6th CB? Yes.
